In what may be a reflection of the generally mediocre box office weekend, this week in new DVDs, we have a single film that made over a million dollars at the box office, and that movie's not even the one that starred Mel Gibson or Keanu Reeves. Everything else was either a super-flop, or such a limited release that no one bothered to go see it. On the downside, there's nothing super exciting coming out this week; on the plus side, maybe you'll find a diamond in the rough somewhere in here?
| 1. Win Win A spectacular Rotten Tomatoes meter couldn't save this from Pope's wrath, but I'll probably check it out regardless of what he thinks. I'm no huge Paul Giammatti fan or anything, but he makes interesting films usually. | |
| 2. The Beaver I think we've all heard entirely too much about this film and how Gibson's voicemails wound up sinking it. Hopefully in a year or two people will be able to judge it on its merits. | |
| 3. The Troll Hunter So far as found footage films go, this one has flaws, as the humor ultimately wound up undercutting the tension and scares for me, but it's entirely enjoyable as a drunken movie night, and it's in that context that I recommend you check it out. | |
| 4. Henry's Crime I just realized now that I saw this but never reviewed it. It's a wannabe crime caper that, unfortunately, doesn't properly utilize the talents of almost anyone involved, and goes so far as to make Vera Farmiga almost repulsive-looking, if that's possible. A confusing little movie, but not one that I ultimately recommend. | |
| 5. Poetry Goddamn, even the poster of this movie looks depressing. I'm guessing it's about an old dying lady who wants to write one last goddamn poem about dying before she dies of the dying disease. And...after reading the summary on Wikipedia, I think I might have actually undersold how depressing this movie actually is. | |
| 6. The Greatest Movie Ever Sold I confess that Morgan Spurlock kind of annoys me. I generally agree with the message behind his films, but they always seem wed to an aggravating self-promotion, or a desire to push the Spurlock brand, that seems particularly ironic given the subject matter of this film. | |
| 7. Sympathy for Delicious A faith healer can't decide if he wants to faith heal or become a DJ. I don't think you can come up with a more hipster description for a film than that, but the trailer intrigues me. Mark Ruffalo's directorial debut. | |
| 8. Swingers Swingers gets a Blu-Ray release, alongside the seminal Rounders and the Bruce Willis semi-flop Hostage. | |
| 9. The Event We can finally celebrate the release of the entirety of The Event on Brothers & Sisters: The Complete Fifth Season, Gossip Girl: The Complete Fourth Season, NCIS - The Complete Eighth Season, NCIS: Los Angeles - The Second Season |
