DVD/Blu-Ray: If There Was An Oscar For Best Ensemble, This Movie Would Probably Win

Not a single dry eye in the house.
Not a single dry eye in the house.

I don't often think much about reviews that I've written after I'm done with them, but I can't help but shake the thought that I might have undersold Super 8 a bit. It was a four-star review, but that's a movie that's stuck with me throughout the summer and fall, and I really can't wait to see it again, to the point where I just...might...get...the Blu-Ray. Oh, hell, I think I'll go ahead and make a snap decision and just get it on Amazon. It won't be here until after Thanksgiving, but then I don't think I really need it...oh, man, and if you use the code "Woodward" on Amazon you get an extra five bucks on it. So, 15 bucks for a great movie with a DVD copy I can send to my mom. Alright, done. Amazon, you win again.

Other movies coming out on DVD this week, and I swear to god these are all real:

1. Super 8

While mildly uneven, this was definitely one of the best times I've had in a theater this year. Highly recommended if you missed it when it came out.

2. Conan the Barbarian

Highly missable if you were recommended it when it came out, apparently, and certainly one of the year's bigger bombs, proving that even a big brand can't help you when you make a $90 million film and forget to make it good.

3. The Devil's Double

I've heard a lot about this movie, even if it wasn't entirely positive: the barely-50% RT rating doesn't fill me with confidence, and goddamn if that poster doesn't just creep me right the eff out.

4. Sarah's Key

I kind of love Kristen Scott Thomas's choice to just give up on Hollywood and British films and go off and make French movies. If you haven't seen Tell No One, go do that right now and come back in a couple hours.

5. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World

I don't know why I put this one so far down the list, but maybe it was because no one liked it. I don't like it, either, and I haven't even seen it.

6. The Family Tree

"A mother and wife stricken with memory loss allows a dysfunctional family a second chance at harmony and happiness." Oh, those kookie indie comedies and their wacky quirky plots! I hear it's actually pretty over-the-top in where it goes from there, but then, it also made a shade over six grand during its theatrical run, so I'm guessing word of mouth wasn't fantastic.

7. 12 Angry Men

Older films coming in new editions include: 12 Angry Men (Criterion), Rushmore (Criterion Blu-Ray), Birth of a Nation, Way Down East

8. Doctor Who (Reboot)

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series, The Adventures of Tintin: Season One, The Office (U.K.): Special Edition

I actually watched ThanksKilling once with some friends. It wasn't so great.

Imdb rates The Devil's Double to be quite high. For the horror fans, check out these threads: http://rue-morgue.com/boards/showthread.php?t=30392

Although I don't want to sound like an idiot or anything, saying that one no one liked Spy Kids 4 is a simply case of over exaggerating. After all there were a few positive review.

Super 8 to me was just... alright, not a bad film, in fact a good film overall, but it just didn't do for me what it did for so many other fans.

It may have been terrible but at least we've got a Thanksgiving themed horror movie. We were sorely lacking these.

I absolutely loved Super 8! However, my second viewing was at a significantly smaller screen and I enjoyed it a little less...maybe the scale of the visuals and sound in the cinema play some sort of role - it'd be interesting to see if that makes a difference on Blu Ray.

Philistines! Thankskilling is a cinematic masterpiece! The finest 2000 dollars ever spent on a movie production.

Thanks for the heads up on the Amazon code Super 8, I just might have to buy me a copy. Super 8 totally captured being a wide-eyed youngster and making amateur movies. I loved that they showed their zombie movie during the credits. One of my favorites of the year.

Yeah I didn't like it either. It's not "so bad it's good", it's just an awful movie. It's almost too self aware, which means the irony is lost.

I engage in hyperbole from time to time, it's true.

Loved Super 8 the first time I saw it, but I saw it a second time in theaters and my problems with it during the first go around were only more apparent. Still a great movie, but a bit too much spectacle over emotion to really make it a classic.

I didn't hate Super 8, but had many problems with it like the script, alien, pacing, and climax. Still, the kid actors were likeable. So nothing to get this ti-... RUSHMORE CRITERION?!

Damn it, audio commetary is my weakness!

I can't believe there's no wiki page for Antfarm Dickhole.

Super 8 wasn't as good as you make it out, if anything you oversold it tbh. I think kids would like it more than me as it reminded me of a modern day Goonies with Aliens

I think all the plot holes in Super 8 turned me off the most.

or the stupid monster design.

and then perhaps I just wanted it to be something it never set out to be. I wanted Super 8 to be this brilliant coming of age action/drama film and it has touches of that in the beginning. The film they were trying to make should have been representative of their childhood and how they are grasping to hold on to it. But in the end the film the kids were trying to make meant nothing and I was left a little cold.

But again. I think I'm expecting too much.
