I think we can all agree that Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is one of the bigger surprises of the movie-going year, and here it is in a Blu-Ray form, hopefully to aid and abet Andy Serkis' quest to be the first person to be nominated for an acting Oscar without ever appearing in the movie for which he gets the nomination. Will it happen? I doubt it, but regardless, we'll have ROTPOTA to fall back on if we want a hell of an entertaining film. Most of you have likely seen it, given the startling $480 million worldwide gross (more than Thor, Captain America, or X-Men: First Class managed), but if you haven't, it's definitely well worth a rental.
Anyway, here's the rest of the stuff that's coming out on DVD and/or Blu-Ray. Any must-haves for you?
 | 1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes If you had told me at the beginning of the summer that this would make more money than Kung Fu Panda 2, I would've laughed at you, but damn if it didn't. I guess America voted for its favorite simian the old-fashioned way: with money. Also, you should see this movie because it's good. |
 | 2. Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom The other big ape movie of the summer was just kind of OK. Visually it was often lush, but damn if I just can't find anything to like about Jack Black's voice anymore. See this movie if you want, but don't be surprised if you just kind of say "yeah, that's alright" at the end of it. |
 | 3. Fright Night I actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would, and I recommend that you take some time out of your busy schedule and check it out for yourself. It might not be the best vampire film to ever arrive, but it's a more than competent action comedy with a great performance by Colin Farrell. |
 | 4. RA. One Bollywood! |
 | 5. Circumstance Although set in Iran, this look at Iranian youth culture was actually filmed in Lebanon. I don't know why that's relevant to anything, but hey, them's the facts. |
 | 6. The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 For some reason, a bunch of Swedes took a bunch of footage of the Black Power movement, and it was just recently cut together into a documentary. And now's your chance to watch it! |
 | 7. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame As over wire-fu as I am, this looks like a fun little movie. We'll find out...together. |
 | 8. Transformers In older films and box sets, we have the Transformers Trilogy box set, The Rocketeer: 20th Anniversary, The Expendables: Extended Director's Cut, Branded To Kill, Tokyo Drifter, Seven Chances, Meet Me In St. Louis, and City of God arriving in Blu-Ray. |
