I'm frankly a little befuddled by the whole Nutcracker story. I wrote a bit about it in the list below (if you care, I compile the list before I write this news story, which is why I probably double up on things here and there), but I'll repeat myself for my own sake: I don't think I've ever, ever heard of a movie actually changing its title between its theatrical release and its DVD release. That is a special kind of deception that seems all too befitting a movie that apparently cashes in on a beloved story to deliver a horrid, terrible experience. In other news, I can't wait to watch it, whether they're calling it The Nutcracker In 3D or The Nutcracker: The Untold Story. Too bad Netflix is making me wait a month to actually get the DVD. It's not like I'm going to buy it.
In other DVD news, Jessica Alba was apparently someone's first choice to play a reclusive math genius. Sure. Also, Emma Stone!
| 1. Cars 2 Pixar's worst movie not only fell short of critical glory, but also...well, I was going to say it didn't do much for them financially, but that would be stretching the truth, as it did do over 500 million dollars worldwide, and will wind up netting them many multiples of that in merchandise sales. Hey, at least someone else will win the Animation Oscar this year. | |
| 2. Crazy, Stupid, Love. I really liked this movie! I think more people should watch it! It's got Emma Stone being adorable and I like that! I don't really understand how the guy who wrote this screenplay could also have a story credit for Cars 2, but hey - get money, Mr. Dan Fogelman. | |
| 3. Water for Elephants Everyone buckle up, this train's pulling into snoresville! I'm mildly curious why this took six months to arrive on DVD, but only mildly! | |
| 4. The Nutcracker in 3D So here's a weird story: The Nutcracker In 3D was one of the biggest bombs of last year, costing $90 million dollars to make but only raking in $195,459 at the domestic box office. (It made around $14 million internationally, mostly in Russia, but still.) Apparently the stigma on it was so bad that they actually changed the name for the DVD release, and it's now The Nutcracker: The Untold Story. Apparently it's horrible, so be sure to buy a copy for everyone on your Christmas list! | |
| 5. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan I'm not sure why a movie set in 19th century China needs to be spoken in English. I guess the novel its based on was in English, so there's that. Anyway, it was under 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, so I'm guessing it wasn't very good regardless! | |
| 6. Tabloid Errol Morris is a good documentary filmmaker. This is a documentary he made. I'm going to assume that it's good. | |
| 7. Bunraku I could've sworn this was in theaters like a month ago, but I'm assuming its quick release onto DVD was the end goal for it all along. I hear not good things! | |
| 8. An Invisible Sign Oh, yes, the "Jessica Alba is a math genius who retreats into a world of numbers after her father falls ill" movie. Sure, I'd buy that. For a dollar. In an alternate universe. | |
| 9. Trespass The more I think about it, the more I suspect that this was released into theaters purely for contractual reasons. It doesn't look good at all, but maybe it'll find an audience on DVD? | |
| 10. Californication In TV dvds, we have Californication: Season 4 and Seasons 1-4, Deadliest Catch Season 7, and Transformers Beast Wars: The Complete Series. |
