I am planning to host a christmas party at my house. Every year we attempt to do this right and have a movie on in the background. People drank and relax on the couch. Every year we never decided on the movie. So my battle plan is to pregame the movie. What is the best christmas movie that a bunch of 20-somethings would know. I have a large collection of dvd's (the majority of classics are in this selections). If it is something obscure, we are very good at finding disc.

No love for it's inferior sequel that is also set at Christmas time?

@CrimsonAvenger: It's still a fine movie, but not nearly as excellent as the original.

I forgot to mention, that last year, Die Hard was the film of choice. ( My wife favorite film of all time is National Lampoons Christman Vacation, so we will view this multple times throughout the holiday.) Though I do always love to watch Die Hard and I may be ablt to sneak it back in the blu-ray player.

Then the obvious choice is Lethal Weapon

Eyes Wide Shut. Turn your party into an ORGY!

@joseph I still remember when I went to see Eye's Wide Shut with my dad. That was really awkward. @President_Barackbar I feel this year, it will be a Lethal Weapon year.

If you're looking for something to have on in the background, I'd recommend the smash hit holiday classic Jingle All the Way. You can drift in and out and catch some really random stuff. Arnold Schwarzenegger punching a reindeer! Sinbad threatening to blow up a radio station! Phil Hartman trying to feel up Tom Hanks' wife! Robert Conrad! Martin Mull! Harvey Corman! The Big Show dressed as Santa punching a midget who is also dressed like Santa! Police officers on trampolines! This one is a winner.

Bad Santa. Or How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

I'm a happy person, I swear. I love Christmas.

If you want kitsch with a twist of weird.. Santa Claus is fab!

It's totally bizarre but oddly appealing!

While I think Christmas Vacation is a new Christmas classic, and it's a family tradition in my household; however I'd go with something different. Any of these are good alternatives:

Scrooged (1988)

Elf (2003)

Jingle All the Way (1996)

For something that has Christmas in it even though it's not specifically about Christmas, in addition to the above mentioned Die Hard there is...

Gremlins (1984)

Trading Places (1983)

Batman Returns (1992)

Better Off Dead (1985)

For a TV special available on DVD, I'd suggest

Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean & Black Adder's Christmas Carol

Emmit Otter's Jugband Christmas Special & A Muppet Family Christmas

Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny
