So film fans, I'm in need of some recommendations for must see films in the sci-fi genre. Over the past month I've made it a promise to watch films I've never seen before, especially the so called classic and sort of became obsessed with sci-fi after watching Blade Runner which I adored. There's a lot of films I haven't seen so willing to listen to some options.

I'm looking to purchase the Alien Anthology as I've never taken the time to watch those films all the way through and feel it deserves so.

Thanks.

I don't know if I would label these "must see". But here are some I really enjoyed and still do.

Demolition Man, Total Recall, The Matrix.

If you are watching the Aliens you can probably skip the 3rd. It ain't so great.

If I think or more i'll post them.

I do not think I have to mention Star Wars.

2001: A Space Odyssey is great and a classic. Also Clockwork Orange. Both Kubrick films.

Here's 25 films from before 1990 that are worth seeing.  I left off a few of the more obvious choices (Close Encounters, 2001, etc...)

  1. Metropolis (1927)
  2. Things to Come (1936)
  3. The Thing From Another World (1951)
  4. Invaders From Mars (1953)
  5. War of the Worlds (1953)
  6. Them (1954)
  7. Forbidden Planet (1956)
  8. 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957)
  9. The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
  10. The Blob (1958)
  11. Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
  12. Mysterious Island (1961)
  13. Day of the Triffids (1961)
  14. The Andromeda Strain (1971)
  15. Solaris (1972)
  16. Silent Running (1972)
  17. A Boy and His Dog (1975)
  18. Damnation Alley (1977)
  19. Capricorn One (1978)
  20. The Final Countdown (1980)
  21. Outland (1981)
  22. Brainstorm (1983)
  23. The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
  24. Explorers (1985)
  25. The Hidden (1987)

1951's The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic but I never cared for it much, so I didn't include it on my list above.  Like Gone With the Wind, I recognize its value, but still don't enjoy the movie.

Go for the Chuck Heston triple bill: The Omega Man, Soylent Green, and Planet of the Apes.

Source Code and Moon are two relatively recent sci-fi movies from Duncan Jones. Both are amazing. I'd also recommend District 9, JJ Abrams' Super 8 and Star Trek interpretation, and Serenity, although only after seeing Firefly.

Moon and District 9 are two recent sci-fi films that I'd recommend to anyone. Both are absolutely fantastic!

The Matrix, obviously, but perhaps moreso (and for less blatantly quotable reasons), Dark City.

Pitch Black is high on my list of really stellar sci-fi films. It doesn't come to mind for a lot of people right away, but I'd certainly call it worthwhile. Also, John Carpenter's The Thing is a terrifying, striking blend of sci-fi and horror.

Anyone with me on Scanners? Because I think that movie is fucking great.

Monsters was good and is the same sort of low budget style as District 9

From Blade Runner it is all downhill I am afraid.

Highlander  Forget the sequels ever existed
A Boy and his Dog
Star Trek 2
Robocop and to a lesser extent Robocop 2  Avoid 3 and the TV series

Sooo many good sci fi's

Primer if you want a real intelligent make you think kind of film

Blade Runner, Gattaca, Children of Men - are serious but fantastic sci fi films

Exisenz, The Fly - both David Cronenberg's and two of my favorites are body horror sci fi's but very good, Existenz is about a video game

Moon, Sunshine - are two new sci fi's, Sunshine is gorgeous with an amazing soundtrack by Danny Boyle and Moon is David Bowie's son Duncan Jones's first film and is fantastic

The Abyss - is an underwater aliens film with a message about humanity

The Thing - is a sci fi horror set in the Antarctic. make sure to watch the John Carpenter version though

The Day the Earth Stood Still, Soylent Green Forbidden Planet - are both classic sci films. Forbidden Planet has Leslie Nielsen before he went comedian as the ships captain.

A lot of people will recommend 2001: A Space Odyssey, but honestly as a sci-fi buff I have to say it has got to be one of the most overrated and boring films I have ever seen. This thread's old but I'll still put down what sci-fi films I can recommend to anyone.
