In case you hadn't heard the Dragon Ball universe is a bit popular among some people out there. So much so that even years of watching the same series on television, the Dragon Ball Z series, they decided to remake, redo, and remaster the entire series. This cleanup and series small changes turned into the series known as Dragon Ball Z Kai.

With that history lesson I has a question, should these two have separate pages on Screened?

Pardon my gaps in knowledge in case the answer is quite obvious but it seems to me that for the most part, they are the same.

So should they stay split? Is there a big enough difference? Or are a all delusional?

I have not seen Kai but if they are the same show with minor changes they should share the same page. We do not make a separate page for every movie with a director's cut.

Kai is one of the best ideas in the world. Still, it's a marketing ploy, not a new series.

It deserves a new page as much as Criterion collection versions of film deserve their own page. That is to say, no.

The American version is such a clusterfuck. So many cuts, then they release the uncut version and have a completely different name for it. File it under Dragon Ball Z

Kai is a DRASTIC change from DBZ though. Something like 2/3 of the material has been edited out. Basically, in Japan anime are often produced concurrently with the manga, but manga come out much slower than they can produce the episodes, so the anime either has to make up filler, or stretch things out until the manga catches up. Kai removes the filler and stretchiness to make it reflect the original manga. I think such a large change and that premise would warrant it having its own page.

Although, wouldn't it be more appropriate for AnimeVice where each DOES have its own page?

I thought they just redubbed and remastered everything and cut some of the filler crap. Figure you add like a little Kai section in the body section of the main page.

@AlKusanagi: AnimeVice and Screened share quite a few pages in common. The difference will be they have the manga as well and we just focus on the TV and movies. So if you're super knowledgeable you could get crazy amounts of points on both sites.

Also 2/3?

I know they did what @MrMazz: says, remastered and redubbed in some cases but did they really alter the original material so much?

@FinalDasa: According to DBZwiki They cut the Garlic Jr Saga and changed the opening and closing credits. The opener is some lame Dragon Soul happy song not the awesome metal Original.

I figure you treat it like a directors cut of a movie or a unrated cut of a movie. SO I guess list the differences on the main page.

I liked the original DBZ more because the filler stuff was actually fun on my book. Liked DBZ Kai too, but not as much.

@FinalDasa: I think DBZ and DBZ Kai should have separate pages because they happen to be treated like two separate shows in the franchise despite some people saying that it's "the same show" when it really wasn't due to part of the not-important stuff being cut out.

@Bigheart711: Couldn't we just have a "kai"section on the page?

I wouldn't mind keeping the two, just seems odd when overall the changes are in picture and sound quality, but essentially it is the same show.

@FinalDasa:Yup, they REALLY trimmed the fat off of it. The original DBZ clocks in at 291 episodes, while Kai is 98.

@AlKusanagi: Damn! How I'll miss those powering up episodes.

@FinalDasa: They're waaaay too different. Kai isn't just a HD upscale with some filler trimmed away. Virtually everything was redone. New music, new scripts, entire arcs were removed, some new voice actors, new staff and companies involved... once you look at the US versions there are even more changes. This time around they've stuck as close to the new Japanese scripts as possible, but the dub scripts for Z were terrible by comparison. Creative license and all that, blegh. Since some of the voice actors have changed, it would make listing them for their Kai roles on the Z pages a nightmare. The episodes are too different to even make doing that feasible at all really.

Pretty much the only thing they didn't do for Kai is do the animation from scratch. Other than that it's basically a remake rather than a directors' cut.

Plus, it's listed as a separate show on every other website I've seen, so I don't see why we should be any different.
