[UPDATED]

Article Sections

The following are H2 section titles for each type of wiki page. Please maintain the same order and spelling for section titles that you see below. Other applicable H2 section titles are, but not limited to "Other Media". You may leave out sections if you DO NOT have any information to add for that section. Never copy/paste an article from another site into Screened's wiki.

Character Article:

Background

Discuss the basic fundamentals of this character. This should be one/two paragraph(s).

Major Plots

This is the ONLY section of the article that can have plot summaries. Please see What is a Plot Summary before you start.

Personality and Traits

Discuss what makes this character interesting.

Movie Article

Overview

What kind of movie is this? Explain the movie in a paragraph as it relates to the genre, time period, creators, sequels, etc.

Creation

In a paragraph discuss the key people responsible for the movie.

Plot Summary

This is the ONLY section of the article that can have plot summaries. Please see What is a Plot Summary before you start.

Production

Discuss significant details of the film making process. Example, you'd discuss 3D here for the movie Avatar OR the production catastrophe behind Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote.

Critical Reception

Don't add your personal opinion here. Objectively discuss why audiences/reviewers accepted/rejected a movie.

Show Article

Overview

What kind of show is this? Explain the show in a paragraph as it relates to the world, it's genre, etc.

Characters

Discuss the major characters over the course of the show. Do NOT make a list.

Plot Summary

Explain the main plot points of the show over the seasons/episodes. Please see What is a Plot Summary before you start.

Episode Article

Plot Summary

Please see What is a Plot Summary before you start.
Episodes are the ONLY place we'll allow an official plot summary written by the show's publisher, but we'd rather have original written summaries. Never, ever copy an article or plot summary from another wiki.

Person Article:

Career

Personal Life

Object, Concept, Location, Cliche Article:

Overview

What NOT to do with H2/H3 tags:

Please keep the spelling and grammar of the H2 tags consistent across the character pages and:

  • Do NOT use the name of the movie, show, character, etc in the H2 (e.g. "Alternate Versions of Avatar" should just be "Alternate Versions")
  • Never link a H2 or H3 section title
  • Never add bold, underline or italics to an H2 or H3 section title.

What is an H3 tag for?

An H3 tag is to make sub sections under the H2 section titles. The same rules of formatting apply to H3, as they do H2, don't hyperlink, bold, underline, italicize an H3 header.

@ethan: Nice guide. This should make the pages more cleaner and more consistent throughout Screened. Are you planning on making one of these guides for movies as well? Cause it seems like everyone has their own way of writing a wiki page here. I'd like to see the movie pages be more consistent. So a guide where you talk about where the Plot, Production, Reception etc. areas should go would be a great help!

@Mushir: Yes I'll have this guide for EVERY article type this week.... I'll just add the rules to this post.

btw, I published this post before I was ready with the other parts of it because I had to change the task queue theme to character articles today.

@ethan: Ah, that's great to hear. Looking forward to it!

@ethan: Great these easy guidelines might make me start wiki'n.

@ethan: First of all, thanks a TON for doing this.  Having more uniformity throughout the site will be a beautiful thing, and will also hopefully make it less intimidating for people to start filling stuff in!

I do have a little concern about the specific H2s that you suggest above.  They seem to be perfect for comic character pages, but I think they need to be slightly tweaked for folks in movies/TV shows.   "Origin", and "Character Evolution" are really specific to superheroes, and don't really apply to say, George Costanza, or John Locke or whoever.

Also, it might be good to just make a little note that we can include other suitable H2s if they apply.  I don't know what else you think would be suitable (Personality? Interests? Cultural Impact?), but I'd hate to see people delete good info because they thought it didn't fit into one of the standard H2s, and anything else wasn't allowed.

Thanks for reading these nit-picks, and thanks again for trying to make Screened as pretty as it should be!    ;)

@gangly: Yup, good point. I believe we need to figure out a different system for Screened. One that best suits movie and TV characters.

I think I need to see a finished example of this first. Don't really understand the different sections!

Glad this was posted as help me out greatly when thinking of how to update character pages.

@Mushir: @gangly: I do say above that you should leave out H2s that do not apply.  I can make that more clear.

But yes, maybe we can drop Character Evolution all together.  Major Story Arcs would apply to TV characters perhaps better than it does for movie characters.

Definitely.  Although I can't think of a good term for a characters' story that would work for both TV and Film.  Maybe just "Synopsis"?  I don't know.

But I do think it's very important to nail down these terms BEFORE everyone starts making changes to these pages.  Maybe it would be beneficial to first get some feedback from the community about what headings have worked best for them, and we could look at some of the best pages so far to glean what the ideal standard H2s would be?

I hate to think of people working hard on these current edits, just to see their work changed (or worse, deleted!) in the future because what they were told to do wasn't totally right.

I agree with the comments about changing some of the headings to fit tv/movie characters. I'm not sure there are many characters with origin story (Such as what would you write for the origin story of Ted (HIMYM)?

I think creation is interesting but will be difficult to find information for except for a few cases. This might just be me but for a lot of TV/Movie characters I think it would be tough to find more than a sentence on this.

Hey guys Rorie and Alex went over this with me and we've simplified the headers to "Background, Major Plots, Personalities & Traits".
Post by skidd (2,155 posts) See mini bio
Excellent! These new headers are exactly the kind of stuff we need to standardise everything.
Post by FrozenPeas (417 posts) See mini bio
@ethan:  Excellent, those sound perfect. I think I might have to take up the challenge of a wiki task to test drive these new headers :D Thanks Ethan, always appreciate the work you do.

@ethan: Great, these make a helluva lot more sense to me now! =)

@ethan: I don't know if it has been previously discussed but I've noticed alot of the Star Wars characters pages that are in the Wiki Tasks have Trivia. Any opinion on those. Should they be attempted to be integrated into the rest of the page?

Since character pages dont have a sub page for trivia, I'm fine with people adding trivia as an H2 at the bottom of the article.
