For those of you newer to Screened you may have noticed some pages have an insane amount of information on them. And that's exactly what we want on Screened, way too specific information that has almost no other place to be. I'm sure even Wikipedia would think it uninteresting that during the Empire Strikes Back's filming it was so snowed in that several Hoth scenes were filmed simply outside the hotel's door. But on Screened that information has a home.

Unfortunately in the years since Screened's inception (BRRRRAAAWWWWWWW!) we have had plenty of pages added that encourage generic wiki editing. Pages like alcohol or suit sometimes are added just because a film has one or the other. A movie like Dark Knight Rises has both but neither are featured prominently in the plot nor have a great significance to the movie, yet both are connected to it.

So from here on out, the purge begins. Generic is out and specific is in. While pages like alcohol and suit may survive we don't want them to have 1,000s of connections that are meaningless. So add to this post any generic pages you know of or find along your editing adventures and we can discuss how each case can be handled. I'll do my best to go through what I can and hopefully set up new pages that are more specific and throw out some of the old.

@FinalDasa: But alcohol is in almost 300 movies!

This is a great opportunity to standardize our wiki like what AV is starting to do with their wiki. For example, we could recommend how big a picture should be or shouldn't. we all know that small pictures create blurry default pages, but I think sometimes really big pictures could bad too (like this picture). What is the point of a big picture if you can only see half of it?

We could also standardize our captions. According to this thread from AV, it could increase the amount of traffic on screened and make the picture more descriptive.

@Acura_Max: Ethan always told me to add pictures that were considered large on Google image searches. So it has to be about 500x500. Eventually a common sense with images develops and you know what is good and what isn't.

As for captions you'll see some wiki tasks come up asking for just that because they do drive a lot of traffic to the site and can help image galleries look much better (especially when you can't tell what an image is).

@RockinKemosabe: And Lincoln Town Car has over 1,000. :/

I think 300x300 is the bare minimum so that the pictures don't get stretched out, but in my mind, higher-res is always better.

As for the purge, I fully support this endeavor!

Basically I'm at the point where every object on the first object page should be gone through and either deleted or edited heavily.

Any objections or alternatives need to be suggested soon.

Edit: First to bite the dust were sunglasses, glasses, and shotgun. Way too generic and meaningless to have on the wiki.

@FinalDasa: I'm going to miss the Lincoln Town Car, but it has to be done.

How do you feel about some of the location pages such as the Europe page? For example, when a person adds Germany to a page, they would also add Europe to that same page also. Isn't it common knowledge that Germany is part of Europe?

@Acura_Max: I don't mind those pages but they get abused. A page like Earth should only be added on shows or movies that make Earth a meaningful destination. So for example Star Trek could have it attached because often they aren't they and going to Earth is meaningful. But having it on EuroTrip or Expendables is meaningless since we can already assume it takes place on Earth.

Edit: Lincoln Town Car bites the dust. Jeep too.

Chevy Impala and Ford Mustang are also now gone.

No object is now attached to over 1,000 pages. No object should be broad enough to even reach a few hundred let alone 1,000.

Okay, I'll come here if I ever find anything that's totally Generic like the Cartoon Character page. Should it be deleted anyway?

@Acura_Max: Sorry to derail, but is that a real movie that poster image is advertising? As in, a real actual movie people need to pay money to see?

Post by RockinKemosabe (884 posts) See mini bio

@FinalDasa: Well I'm going to create an object in the wiki called oxygen and attach it to every movie! Maniacal laugh! Maniacal laugh!

@Bigheart711: Yes anything that generic will either be out right deleted or if it can serve some purpose on the wiki retained but heavily edited down. Right now I'm focusing on object but anything you think deserves a look at just and in here.

@RockinKemosabe: Do it. I don't think I've ever permanently wiki banned someone....yet....

@jackanderson: The trailer does get better after Olivia Wilde appears.

Here are some I found from the cliche list. Yeah, I know that moderators can't delete cliches, but I thought I should get your approve before asking Stacey to delete them.

Delete / Keep

Keep Talkative Villains

Delete Villainous Monologue

Reason: They are kind of the same thing. If you look at the pages they even have the same descriptions, word for word.

Keep I'm The Real One!

Delete Which One's The Real One?

Reason: Pretty much the same thing.

Delete US Government is Corrupt

Keep: Corrupt Government

Reason: Same thing.

Move to different part of wiki

Teen Pregancy sounds more like a concept. Also Pregnancy is misspelled.

Bad Guys Fall to their Death sounds like something that should be moved to the cliche

Other :

I'm not exactly sure what to do with the naked shower scene and the bath scene. To me they sound like pretty much the same thing. The only exception is that one person is sitting and the other is standing.

@Acura_Max: All those sound right to be deleted. As well as switching Teen Pregnancy and Bad Guys Fall around.

As for shower scene and bath scene...I have no clue either. Shower scene (I wish it didn't say naked) seems fine as a cliche since it does seem to be one. Not sure about bath. I wish we could add aliases to those things so it would all be one. I'd say leave those alone for now.

Blood is pretty generic, and can easily be attached to nearly every horror movie. Sports Car and Cigarettes are also generic.

Here is some more stuff I found:

Delete/ Keep

Delete : Villian Song

Keep : Villain Song

Reason : I guess he made another page because that typo in the title and forgot to delete the page. What do you think of the concept?

Delete : Female Director

Reason : Why does this exist?

Accidently turn on garbage disposal instead of light - not connected to anything, but I don't think anyone will add to a page because the title is so long.

Move to Another Wiki

Body Armor should be an object.

@mike20: Agreed. I've been stuck on Blood because it is essential to say vampire movies and such. So I may have to go through that one a bit more thoroughly and then decide. The problem with Cigarettes and Alcohol is they both are attached to quests on the site. So I may have to notify Stacey and see what to do.

@Acura_Max: Got a few.
