What Not do When Adding Similar Movies

For the most part people on here when adding similar movies add films that are relevant in similarity but there are also people who don't do it correctly. I'm not pointing fingers as I have no idea who did it and could care less about finding out who did it.

What to Do

When adding similar movies, don't add them because they're made by the same studio or if it's a comic book film, don't add every DC movie just because it's a DC movie. A good example of a movie with relevant similar movies added to it is Gladiator. Most epics are alike because many of them share the same themes like Independence or some of  them are clones of movies like Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is a clone of Gladiator. Another good example I saw would be Super 8. Here are the things you should think about when adding a movie you feel is similar to a movie:

  • Is it a sequel/prequel to the film?
  • Does it have many of the same themes?
  • Is it a remake of a film?
  • Does it feature the same characters?
Of course there are other things that define a similar movie but these are the thins I could come up with.

What Not to Do

Superman/Shazam is similar to Green Lantern? I don't think so.

Swamp Thing is similar to Green Lantern? No! It isn't.

Taking a look at Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, I noticed that all the similar movies were all the other DC Animated Films. Don't add all of them just because they're DC Animated movies, add them because they're relevant in terms of similarity between the stories and/or style of the film, or even Theme. I removed nearly everyone of the similar movies and kept the ones that were actually similar. The film that inspired to write this blog post is the Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds. I've removed a chunk of movies that weren't similar and were presumably added because they are superhero films.

 I haven't removed all of them as I wanted to leave some up so people would know what I'm talking about. Films like The Batman vs Dracula, Superman/Batman Public Enemies, Batman Mystery of the Batwoman, Batman Returns, Superman Doomsday, and many more should not be listed as similar. Films that should be listed as similar movies are Batman Begins, The Green Hornet, Green Lantern First Flight, and Green Lantern Emerald Knights and movies that share actual similarities. There probably are a few more that should be listed but these are the ones that I know for sure should be listed. For non comic people a good film would be Super 8.

I like your guide as I've noticed this problem too. I think this could be overcome most of the time if we were allowed to group films into franchises and then show other films in that franchise.

@Joe:

I would love a franchise feature. When I first came on here I was surprised that this site didn't have a franchise feature.

@pat4327:

Thanks. I only hope people actually see it though and read it so we don't have people adding dozens of movies to the similar movies list.

It's one of the features that I've and a bunch of others have asked for multiple times but still there's nothing. It's even more surprising when Giant Bomb has had a franchise feature since launch (I think).

Great work on the guide! I've noticed the same problem quite often as well. I'll try and fix them whenever I see them from now on. :)

These types of user made guides make me wish there was a Guide system on Screened as well, where users could post tips and tricks about wiki editing.

@Mushir: The best I can do is add the post to the Screened FAQ, which I did. If you know of any other good ones, let me know!
