Amazing Spider-Man 2 already has writers

In a move that nearly makes me wish Amazing Spider-Man fails horribly, Sony has hired the writers for the seemingly inevitable sequel.

The two writers may ring a bell, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. They are the writing duo behind Star Trek (the Abrams reboot), Transformers, and even helped on Fringe. It's not the greatest writers of all time but they seemingly know how to cultivate a big budget movie script. Link.

I don't like the idea of a studio just assuming their work is going to make billions but Alex and Roberto are currently working on Star Trek 2 so maybe this is just hiring them before someone else does. Does this make you feel better about the future of Spider-Man?

Kurtzman and Orci's writing has me divided. I love the work they did on Star Trek and I also hate their work such as Transformers. Hopefully there's no line that references being located under the enemy's scrotum.

Now, I'd readily say Star Trek is one of the best written blockbusters of the last decade, but even considering that, Kurtzman and Orci make me nervous. In addition to Transformers (as you mentioned) they wrote the mind-numbingly horrible sequel, they CREATED Fringe which is an objectively bad show, and don't forget their early success with the suicide-induingly awful The Island.

Tell me Lindelof or J.J. are involved with this flick, and I'll be confident it'll be great. But without their stablizing force, I worry.

@RockinKemosabe: Totally. I was just saying that those two dudes seem like the secret ingredient to bring out the great talent in that writing team. Without them... it's dangerous.

They're actually re-writing the entire script. James Vanderbilt was hired but the studio I guess hated the first script so they hired these guys instead. Is anybody even excited for this film? I was up until I saw the trailer which just made me lose all interest in seeing this.

@gangly: Uh I love Fringe and it was well received by critics.  If your not down with Walter Bishop then I pity you.

So do you think they will start recycling villains from the previous Spider-Man movies? They still have Kraven the Hunter and Scorpion left of the non lame Spider-Man villains.  I can't see them using Rhino, Mysterio, Hydro-Man, Vulture, Chameleon, Tombstone, Shocker, and or Electro or any combination to carry a sequel.

@not_a_bumblebee: I could see those minor villains showing up but I couldn't see them sustained. Hollywood seems borrow heavily from the comic book stories so I wouldn't be surprised to see rip offs of major storylines already written.

@not_a_bumblebee: Aside from this current season, I've seen every episode of fringe more than once, heavily contributed to our wiki as well as fringepedia, even poured over dvd extras and all that shit, and I stand by the fact that Fringe is a bad series. Walter is a wonderful character brimming with potential, which has been completely squandered. I'll write a blog on it soon, but the flaws are obvious, and almost entirely the fault of the showrunners, who happen to be... Kurtzman and Orci!
