In news that's the equivalent of your girlfriend frequently threatening to leave your ungrateful ass and actually, for once in their miserable existence, going through with it, Chevy Chase has quit Community effective immediately.

His decision to quit is no surprise given his... frequent outbursts about how much he hates working on the show; with his feud with former showrunner Dan Harmon being the most infamous. What is surprising, though, is the state that this leaves the show in. Of the 13 episodes ordered for Season 4, only 11 have been written and/or filmed leaving 2 to go. This leaves the question of exactly how the show plans to deal with the loss of Pierce Hawthorne, considering that Chase's resignation came out of the blue.

So... is it just me, or does this pretty much guarantee that we are not getting a back 9 for this Community season, let alone a 5th season? Despite Chase's... less-than-intelligent on-set behavior, I still find Pierce a vital part of the show and one that I just don't see the show coping without. Of course, being British, I'm yet to see Season 3, so this is based on my limited view, but my point still stands. How could the group work without Pierce?

Hang on! Just remembered! Leonard still exists, right? There's our Pierce replacement, then! So long, Chevy! Been... interesting knowing you!

Altogether, now: Six seasons and a movie!

The show can still go on without Pierce.

I'm sure they'll have a "Pierce died in a hilarious way" episode. They'll probably be able to spin this.

Surprising but unexpected. I wish he had decided to vacate before being part of the reason Harmon has left the show.

I can't imagine a show without that character. Community, in my opinion, balances the group dynamic well and just when you're tired of seeing one character stereotype they throw one of the others at you to keep things fresh. Hopefully the show will go on but I don't see how a show already partially "on the ropes" can continue to thrive.

This. I know Harmon wasn't a completely innocent party in what happened, but given Chase's continued outbursts on set and departure this season, it's pretty clear that the guy is just hell the deal with. If he had any decency he would've left before getting the show-runner and creator fired rather than continuing on with a show that he hates being a part of only to leave it as a potentially unsalvageable mess.

Having that empty chair next to Troy will definitely be odd. I'd be fine with just a cardboard cutout or a lookalike. No lines, we just need a 60something who wears vests to stand with the group.

They should just replace Chevy with another Saturday Night Live cast member from the first season and act like nothing is different. I think Garrett Morris is the best choice.
