MOONRISE KINGDOM, and Indie Spirit Best Feature nominee
MOONRISE KINGDOM, and Indie Spirit Best Feature nominee

The Independent Spirit Awards are given out by a large non-profit dedicated to promoting independently-produced film projects. To be eligible, a film must come out in the 2012 calendar year, it must be independently produced, it must have a budget not exceeding $20 million, and it must be made in America.

This year there is a bit of controversy as it seems Silver Linings Playbook should not have been eligible since its budget may have exceed $20 million. This has upset many because it lessens the attention lower budget films receive. For all the details on that story, read this unofficial Screened article on it (by me).

I'm happy Bernie got nominated for both Best Picture and best actor in the Spirit Awards. Jack Black did his best performance in his career in that movie.

Hell Yeah! Bernie was incredible. Though I am rooting for Beasts of the Southern Wild to win best picture. Also a good year for great acting from Matthew McConaughey of all people. He was good in Bernie but incredible in Killer Joe. Who knew he could actually act?

His performances in CONTACT and 13 CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING were great. And I thought he was just as funny as Robert Downey Jr. in TROPIC THUNDER.

@VioletEyedDragon: Well I might of been exaggerating a bit but Matthew McConaughey was clearly coasting in the numerous romantic comedies and the disaster that was Sahara. Other good McConaughey movies I would add Frailty, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Amistad.

I haven't seen FRAILTY or AMISTAD, but I agree he was great in THE LINCOLN LAWYER, even if the movie was only so-so at best.
