Rather then doing a standard list of my favorite movies of 2012. Which to be honest would resemble most other list. I decided to make a list of older movies I discovered and loved for the first time in 2012. Here they are in no particular order -
1. True Romance - We lost a hell of a director this year when Tony Scott passed away and this is one of his best. You don't even need to look at the credits to tell this was written by a young Quentin Tarantino. Tons of great performances in this movie and has an incredible scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper that has to be seen to be believed.
2. Videodrome - David Cronenberg at his weirdest. Just a strange little film about James Wood's stomach vagina and Canadian UHF channels.
3. The Frighteners - An underrated horror/comedy from Peter Jackson and what I believe was one of Michael J. Fox's last live action film. The CGI still holds up and I enjoyed that a lot of the town and buildings were used in my favortie Peter Jackson film Dead Alive.
4. The OSS 117 films - Jean Dujardin from The Artist is possible the most charismatic actor to ever live and he really shines in these hilarious French spy spoofs. Even with subtitles the movies are still hysterical.
5. Thirst - A great vampire movie from the director of Oldboy. Chan-wook Park is a hell of a director and can't wait for his first American film coming out this year.
6. Wild at Heart - You would think the combination of David Lynch and Nicolas Cage would be an indecipherable mess of weirdness. Strangely this one of Lynch's more coherent narratives and Nicolas Cage seems slightly subdued. Keep an eye out for Willem Dafoe's teeth.
7. Road House - I feel embarrassed I have not seen this movie earlier as someone who prides themselves on having seen a shit load of cult classics. Road House isn't going to win any awards but damned if this just isn't a fun movie to watch with friends. It really delivers everything you want in a cheesey 80's action movie and then some.
8. The African Queen - I just love the chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn which without that this film would sink like a German warship. Just further proof they made good movies before the 1980's.
9. Trainspotting - You ever have one of those movies that you swear you've seen but then you go to watch it again you realize you had never seen it in the first place? This was that movie for me. Oh also what a great movie that Danny Boyle has a future I tell you what!
10. Jacob's Ladder - Despite knowing the twist ending before going in, I was still genuinely unnerved and dare say scared during this movie. If you ever had the misfortune to have played the turd that was Silent Hill: Homecoming then you will quickly realize that level and monster designs were straight up stolen from Jacob's Ladder.
