It has good acting and shows the truth of the american dream. Plus it's Terry Gilliam. So why did critics hate it?

@stoodspoon: It's a gaudy mess.

It's definitely not a movie for everyone.

Indeed.

Well it's just so offbeat and strange which makes it unappealing to mainstream media.

It's a mess of a movie... It's an entertaining mess, but a mess nonetheless.

I think it's mostly because it primarily appeals to teenagers and college kids, most of whom like it simply because "YO DAT GUY BE REPPIN DA PURP" (Which I have course have no problem with, but it's a really dumb reason to love a movie)

The editing is shoddy, scenes go nowhere, and it's an overall train wreck. I love the book, but the film is just terrible.

If it came out today instead of the late 90's you would probably see a bit of a different reaction. Not with the mainstream press of course but I mean the people who pay attention to that aren't exactly enthusiastic movie goers. Its entirely valid and productive for mainstream press to give poor ratings to the film as the majority of their readers would probably agree. I for one love the movie but I don't recommend it to many people.

Same reason critics hated Fight Club. Although, Fight Club is a MUCH better film, and was way less deserving of the hate it got.

@Pickle Fight Club was a pretty well received by the critics. An 81% for All Critics and 61% for Top Critics on Rotten Tomatoes is pretty good.  Particularly for a film that runs against mainstream values as much as that film did.

@sissylion   Don't try to hide behind the drug veil.  I've done my fair share of drugs and I consider this film to be an entertaining but hardly a great film.  What hurts this film the most is Johnny Depp.  Depp has a lot of great performances but this is clearly not one of them.  In fact, it is more than fair to say this is simply the worst acting job of his career.  He constantly plays the role with a forced, hammy hand.  At times I thought he was trying to channel a drugged out Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura.  It's a fun, sometimes entertaining film but always rings false and artificial which in th end makes the film feel hollow.

Not only was it not a very good film, but it was inevitably compared to the book and that just made it look worse.

I would disagree with this, as a fan of both.  What Gilliam chooses to depict as screenworthy is pretty God damn accurate to the book.  Sincere to "the fear" and totally beautiful.  And when it comes down to it, a lot of people... no, the majority of people who watch this that hasn't done LSD, mescaline, cocaine, etc etc would find this movie to be unsettling psycho babble nonsense.  The characters are pretty close to how I imagined them when I read the book, which is something that never happens for me ever.  So of course my take on this could be mildly biased.  But yeah... ultimately the subject matter is deep in drug culture which is still a subject matter that is taboo and completely misunderstood.    That has a great impact on the perception and success of a movie, no matter how good it is. "
Good god, do we actually agree on something!?
