Saw this on the Kermode Uncut and I thought this could be a fun thing to do here.

Great Acting in a Bad Film: Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson in Red Dragon. I would also like to add The Bees from The Wicker Man (2006).

Bad Acting in a Great Movie: Orlando Bloom in Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Great acting in a bad film: William Fichtner in anything. Even an irredeemable load of shit like ULTRAVIOLET has some great acting moments from him.

Tilda Swinton and Peter Stormare come to mind from Constantine, but I think the ultimate example is from Raul Julia:

I wouldn't call this example "great acting" but it does illustrate that worthwhile moments can be found in mediocre or bad movies. I recently saw 2010's Date Night starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey. It wasn't funny at all and more than a bit contrived. Anyway, about halfway through the movie, James Franco and Mila Kunis show up as characters "Taste" and "Whippet". They pair are the single bright moment in the movie and I wished that the entire film had been about them instead of Carell and Fey.

Good acting in a bad film: Sam Neill in Daybreakers.... or really anything he's in.

Bad acting in a great film: Most of the supporting cast in Gran Torino.

Man, I actually kind of like Red Dragon, despite the Brett Ratner.

@Rorie: Manhunter is better.  Speaking of Thomas Harris I loved Gary Oldman in Hannibal but was kinda luke warm on the film.
Bad performance in a good movie I would have to say James Franco feels like he is mailing it in for Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Great acting in a bad film: Alan Rickman in 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'. That man can chew scenery like no other.

Bad acting in a great film: Cameron Diaz in 'Gangs of New York'. C'mon, Marty, stop trying to 'uncover' someone.
