As most of you are aware, WB moved the release of Gangster Squad from September to January a few months ago. The reason given was to allow the filmmakers to reshoot the controversial theater shooting scene.
January is not typically a month where studios release films they have high confidence in. Rarely do films released in January make a lot of money or win any awards, and it seems the early part of the year is full of B-grade Jason Statham and Nicolas Cage movies. It's hardly the month to release a film many expected to be in Academy Awards contention or a follow up to Mulholland Falls or LA Confidential. Save for a few surprise hits (i.e. Taken) The film season really begins on the first weekend of March, where the first "big" films of the year begin to be released.
So I'm wondering, despite the talent involved, is this movie gonna be a dog? Unlike other people, I found the poster to look kinda bland and amateurish, and from the trailers, Sean Penn's makeup looks ridiculous. So now that WB is dumping the film off in January, I just don't have high confidence in this movie at all.
