I recently realized that even though I'm a big film buff, there were a lot of films from the past that I missed for whatever reason. For example tonight I'm watching close encounters of a third kind. My question for you is this: What are the movies that you would consider to be essencial to any film lover?

Give me a list of movies you have seen and I'll try to find some that you haven't seen.

Any genre. Just give me a list of movies that I can't live without seeing at least once.

I've been trying to do this for the past couple of years now. I've mostly been going back to things like the Alien movies, the Schwarzenegger filmography (the good ones), Blade Runner, and the Kubrick movies.

The sad thing is out of that list I've only seen schindler's list, tree of life, jaws, alien, and blade runner. My point is... I'm 22 and I've missed a lot of great movies! Can't wait to knock off all those movies over the break. Thanks guys.

There should be a list made up of all the most well known "most important" movie lists averaged together. It would be the definitive list for someone like to start checking off.

@cmpLtNOOb: Although that's a good idea, I think a list like that is too subjective.

And wouldn't the IMDB top movies list already serve this purpose?
