American slavery seems to be a theme of the of the shiny orb shaped award as Lincoln and Django Unchained are the most nominated films for Golden Globe awards.
It's that time of year again. The Hannukkah candles are being lit, the trees are being trimmed, chestnuts are roasting on an open fire and everyone involved with making a movie this year is really only worrying about one thing…awards. Today we found out what films and television shows the very elusive Hollywood Foreign Press Association has decided to recognize at its 70th annual awards. The Golden Globes don't mean as much themselves but rather become an indication as to what are likely to be the frontrunners in the race for the Oscars. In that respect, Lincoln is making some good strides and the yet to be released Django Unchained is picking up steam. It's strange to live in a world where a Tarantino movie about slavery can be nominated for awards, but that is also a good world that I would like to live in. Zero Dark Thirty has been racking up the Critic’s Awards and made a good showing here, but it is a bit early to judge, as it is another film that has yet to be released.
It's hard for me to comment upon my thoughts on the film nominations as a whole, as I have yet to see many of these movies. It is a yearly tradition for me to spend the week of the holidays catching up on every single movie I can. Oh snow, hot coco and movies. Could that be real life all the time, please?
While most of the nominations seemed pretty expected, I think the biggest surprise is the omission of fan favorite Skyfall. Yes, it is a big budget action James Bond movie, but it is also just a damned good movie. The fact that itwas not recognized for its ability to blend the two is mildly shocking to me. It's a tough category this year, but it’s much more deserving than Life of Pi. At least they got it right with Moonrise Kingdom. I might not have seen much yet, but I have seen that and well, that’s enough to make this year happy.
The acting categories are pretty standard with not many surprises. It is likely the drama actress race will be between Jessica Chastain and Marion Cottiallard (leaning towards Chaistain) and I will venture to guess Jennifer Lawrence will win what is the first of many awards in her career for Silver Linings Playbook. Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for The Master, but the film itself was pretty much shut out.
As for television, it seemed like pretty standard fare with a few shocking choices for the best television series in both the Drama and Comedy categories. I mean, The Newsroom?!! It feels as if it was nominated because it's an Aaron Sorkin show and everyone wanted it to be a good Aaron Sorkin show, but it's not. Don't get me wrong, it has its merits, but enough to be better than both Mad Men and The Walking Dead? No way.
Someday I'll get over the shock and upset feeling in my heart that Community is left out of every award, but this time, so was Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock and everything that actually makes a person laugh. And, for what? Smashed! SMASHED PEOPLE!!!! Isn't it widely known that show sucks? Did anybody that nominated it actually watch the show? I'm beside myself on this one.
The Golden Globes will air on January 13th on NBC and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, so at least they got that right.
