Opinions on "Funny People"?

I apologize for the pun in the title XD. I think I might post a fancy blog post about this movie later, but I wanted to see if anyone else had seen this movie and what they thought about it. I was really excited to see the movie, as it seemed to fit into exactly the kind of movie that I really enjoy. Movies like 50/50, the Descendants, or Stranger than Fiction are movies that are hilarious yet allow for a great amount of emotional depth and character. Maybe I need to watch Funny People again, but I personally was disappointed when I saw it. Where I felt like it would rise above the structure of other Adam Sandler movies of late, but it really didn't for me. I just didn't find it funny at all, I found the laughs cheap, and I felt like they squandered the possibility for emotional depth that the premise offered. But I'd like to hear if other people had seen it, and if I should go take a second look (I probably will anyway if I'm gonna do a blog post about it... but still). What did people think of this movie?

The only "dramedy" that I've ever liked is 50/50. Funny People had an awesome cast, but I guess I just didn't really like the plot with Adam Sandler and Leslie Mann.

Felt the same way when I first saw it, but over time and multiple viewings, I have found a love for that movie.

Funny People was a good movie that could of been a great movie with some decent editing. Comedies and even Dramadies shouldn't be 2 and 1/2 hours long even being over a 100 minutes is pushing it.  I also mistakenly thought that this was going to be a turning point in Adam Sandler's career. Boy was I wrong.  At least it gave Adam Sandler a ton of ideas for future films.

I think every one can agree that the last act featuring Eric Bana and Judd Apatow's wife and kids was completely unnecessary and brought the movie to a screeching halt.

I saw this movie a while ago but I remember the only part I laughed was the Eminem and Raymond scene, didn't really like it and I had a pretty good time watching 50/50 and the Descendants

If you've got a movie about funny people, and scenes of them on stage doing stand up comedy, that has to be funny. Otherwise you have failed on an obvious and fundemental level.

So yeah, I hated the film.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: That's kinda what I thought. I loved Click and I thought it would be something in that vein, but it just didn't seem to pan out.

@RelativelySane: I felt the exact same way when I first say Funny People, but after my second and third time watching it I grew to love it. It's defiantly a movie that requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate.

You liked Click ?  Waterboy was when I decided I would stop paying to see Sandler's comedies.  Click was when I decided to stop watching them for free.  Click was an interesting idea that took this weird left turn where it tried to get all melodramatic and sappy but it came off as cheap and disingenuous.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: Well the melodrama took me completely by surprise, and melodramatic and sappy movies are movies that I eat up like candy.

Funny People was interesting, but clearly audiences didn't like it seeing as it had Sandler's biggest second weekend drop in his entire career.

If it hadn't tanked at the box office then we probably wouldn't have seen Jack and Jill.

@RelativelySane: Fair enough.

Funny People needed more RAAAAAAAAANDY

NWS:
Allegedly Judd Appatow wanted to make a spin-off starring Aziz's character but I think due to the fact that Funny People bombed I doubt it will ever happen.

I think Funny People is Apatow's worst movie to date. I just didn't find the characters that funny, engaging, or apathetic. I grew out of Adam Sandler years ago but was willing to give him a shot. He basically is the same man child and I don't have the patience for it, nor do I find it funny anymore. I'm hoping 40 will be different but we'll see.

First half is great, second half is terrible.

I thought Adam Sandler was a big mis-casting, I couldn't really take him seriously.

I mean, he was good in 50 First Dates which was kind of a dramedy. But I just didn't really 'believe' him in this film. The film was nice, sweet but not as funny as I'd have liked.
