Pre-order Movies on Amazon before their Theatrical Release

So maybe this trend has been around and I'm just completely blind to it but I just was on Amazon and since I bought the Alien Anthology on Blu-Ray when they had a sale, I saw a pre-order for Prometheus and I immediately went "what the hell?". It just seems absolutely nuts to me that Amazon is not only taking pre-orders but they seem to already have the cover art done for these films. I guess in the case of Prometheus, if you pre-order you get a movie ticket to see the film. Still, does anyone else think this is a bit absurd? Is this something Amazon is doing or are movie studios pushing pre-orders of movies before they even hit theaters? I saw pre-orders for Total Recall, Expendables 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Madagascar 3, and others. Is anyone else unnerved by this like I am? Granted, if I love the film after seeing it, I may pre-order it but to have the option well before it's release seems odd to me.

I kinda see as the same way with pre-ordering a game. One doesn't know much about a movie expect for the trailers and it's the same thing with a game. It's a leap of faith that the product one put money into is going to be good. Granted with games one can get a better feel if the game is going to be bad or good with in game looks like what Giant Bomb does.
