I am pretty sure there was an Unpopular Opinion thread back in the day and I could of searched for it but I wanted to make a Highlander 2 joke dammit. So just post any Screened related unpopular opinions or thoughts on movies and TV shows or whatever.

So let me start this off -

I've tried numerous times but I just can't get into Sons of Anarchy. I think it is kinda boring and overly melodramatic.

I don't go out of my way to find it but if it is on I have been known to watch Tosh.0 and occasionally laugh.

I love Conan O'Brien when I get linked to his bits but I never bother watching his show I am strictly a Daily Show and Colbert Report man.

The Artist deserved to win the Oscar for Best Picture

I think Step Brothers is one of the funniest movies ever made.

I didn't think The Master was very good.

The Thing (1982) isn't scary at all. Still awesome.

2010 was the best year in movies (judging by the years that I've been paying attention to the film industry).

Oh boy. Oh boy. Let's do this.

Okay, that's all I can think of now, but there's a million more. I got me some of my own opinions.

More opinions!!!

I think Hot Fuzz was better then Shaun of the Dead

Ghostbusters II was a bad movie

With the exception of the Transformers franchise and Pearl Harbor, I have enjoyed all of Michael Bay's films even The Island.

After seeing the trailer during Django Unchained, I really want to see Michael Bay's new movie Pain and Gain. It also looks like a legitimately good movie.

I hated Independence Day, like to the point where I had to force myself to sit through it.

Cars 2 was a fun movie even if it was a little Larry the Cable Guy heavy.

The Cable Guy is my favorite Jim Carrey comedy followed by Dumb and Dumber.

Alright, you asked for it.

  • Seinfeld was NEVER funny. How in the world it lasted nine seasons, let alone how it was so popular that it being cancelled was like headline news for days, is beyond my comprehension.
  • Ditto on The Simpsons. A handful of the Treehouse of Horror episodes were alright, but by and large I never liked it. To top it off, it seems like whenever someone talks about The Simpsons nowadays to to lament how it hasn't been funny for somewhere between 5-10 years, and these people keep watching it. If it's not good anymore, people, it's time to let go. It's time to let go.
  • Actually, most sitcoms are lost on me. I don't like The Office, I didn't find Community funny, and despite the best efforts of my friends, I was kinda bored watching The IT Crowd.
  • While we are on the subject of not funny: Will Ferrell, very not funny. Elf is a bad movie and it kills me that it is considered a new holiday classic.
  • Speaking of which: A Christmas Story is also horribly overrated. And overplayed. And overquoted. Over-everything, really.
  • Citizen Kane...it's alright. No where near the greatest movie ever in my book.
  • I've kind of notice opinion kinda turning on this one, but even when Spider-man 2 came out and was practically unanimously declared the the greatest super-hero movie ever (at the time), I didn't like it. Way too much drama/angst, not enough superheroing. Never even bothered to see Spider-Man 3.
  • But on the other hand, 2004 was the funnest year for movies in a good long time. Hellboy, Aliens vs. Predator, Chronicles of Riddick, Van Helsing...for most people that sounds like a terrible night at the movies, but I enjoyed it so much. 2004: the best year for popcorn movies EVER.
  • The American 1998 Godzilla movie is not the unholy abomination most Godzilla "purists" declare it to be. Not a great movie, but I liked it. I argue it could have been upgraded from "not bad" to "good" if they had gotten someone else for the leading lady role. Maria Pitillo couldn't act her way of out of a paper bag in this movie, and it does a lot to bring it down.

I'm sure I got more, but that's all I can come up with at the moment.

I'm going to assume that at this point, Citizen Kane can't live up to the hype for anybody.

Also, I think Godzilla is ok too.

I had the same experience with The Exorcist. Let me revive this thread with some more unpopular opinions.

I can't defend the Roland Emmerich Godzilla but if it is unpopular I think every movie Roland has made is shit.

Uwe Boll's Rampage is a decent movie.

The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren is the best one.

I prefer Danny Devito's portrayal of The Penguin from Batman Returns as a tragic villain over the wannabe criminal kingpin from the comic books and the animated series.

Oh, I thought of another one.

TRON: Legacy was one of the three best movies of 2010 (I keep changing my mind on that, Inception, and The Social Network).

This is really unpopular. I think the Tron franchise is boring but has some cool visuals and special effects.

I liked THE ISLAND too. I didn't know people didn't like it.

Also, I agree CARS 2 was fun. Not great art or anything (and Larry the Cable Guy got annoying), but thoroughly entertaining.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: I too thought Rampage was a good movie. Maybe Uwe Boll shouldn't do video game movies (but that's a given).

I just thought of another one myself.

I used to think that Starship Troopers was an "ok" movie. I could see why it was a bit of a cult classic, but I didn't think too much of it. Then I read the book. The book became one of my favorite reads, and now I hate the Starship Troopers movie with an unhealthy passion. How anyone could read Starship Troopers (oh, wait, director Paul Verhoeven didn't even finish reading the book!) and say to themselves "You know, instead of making a movie about an elite fighting force of soldiers in powered armor, let's make the mobile infantry a bunch of cannon fodder in plastic armor. And let's make them SPACE NAZIS!"

Look, I'm not even going to go into the parody nonsense, of the propaganda nonsense, or the fact that pretty much all the book has in common with the movie are character names and the names of places they are at. I just want to know what kind idiot you have to be to take the power armor out of Starship Troopers.

I have faint hope that the reported remake of the movie (which is, according to the link, being written by the people who wrote X-Men: First Class and Thor), will more faithful to the book, as at any rate they will take ideas from Verhoeven's movie because of it's popularity. I'm just going to sit over here with my disc set of "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles" because it was better than the movie.

@Toastburner_B: I love Starship troopers, so this definitely belongs in the thread. Verhoven hated the book, I think, didn't he? He made a teen comedy crossed with an alien war on the bad guys side.

Oh, and (500) Days of Summer is a piece of trash. Came here to say that.

Post by welshguy (109 posts) See mini bio

After forcing myself to sit through Inglorius Bastards I now realise I just don't like Quentin Tarantino films. Or the Coen Brothers (though I did find thier True Grit watchable)

@Tylea002: Yes, (500) Days of Summer was trash, you are not alone

Dark Knight Rises was overlong, overly dramatic, just plain silly in places, a lot of the dialogue was awful and Bane was terrible though not as bad as Marion Cottilard who continues to often be the worst thing in a movie

Post by Ghost_of_GhostDad (822 posts) See mini bio

@Toastburner_B: Robert Heinlein was always a little too libertarian for my taste but at least he didn't take it to the Ayn Rand extreme. Starship Troopers is essentially the armed forces rule and war is necessary. I love how Verhoeven took the piss out of that whole "Hoorah" mentality of the book by essentially turning its pro military agenda up a notch or two which led to the Nazi-like uniforms and the whole propaganda vibe of the movie. You have to understand Verhoeven spent his very early years in Nazi occupied Netherlands so he kinda has a negative opinion on blindly following commands and the whole military attitude for some crazy reason.

A lot of people seem to like Starship Troopers so not Unpopular. I will say that Verhoeven's movie Showgirls is my favorite bad movie to see in a theater ala The Room or Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Emmy winning Robot Chicken is the worst show on Adult Swim. Fuck Seth Green for getting paid to play with toys and getting his friends cushy voice acting gigs because people are so stupid they will laugh at nostalgic and recognizable characters making lame dick and fart jokes. How the fuck did that win an Emmy?

Speaking of Adult Swim I like Squidbillies.

Yea, for some reason I just cannot find any fault with that movie. I don't find any part of it dumb or boring, and I don't think any of the performances are bad either. It's just one of those movies that I really got into. The music helped a lot too.

Post by Toastburner_B (134 posts) See mini bio

I have the most unpopular opinions! :D

: All perfectly valid points. I won't begrudge anyone not liking the book because of it's politics, and while I think they went overboard with the parody of the book (despite the fact it was probably intentional), lots of people liked it, so more power to them I guess.

But politics and other controversies about the book aside, I will forever be mystified about the fact that they took the power armor out, especially when you are already making what is basically a special effects movie. It's like going through the trouble of getting, for example, the Robotech/Macross license then saying "You know, those transforming jets are dumb! Throw them out!"

Post by Ghost_of_GhostDad (822 posts) See mini bio

@Toastburner_B: Not faulting anyone for hating the movie because if you look at the critic reviews most of them seemed to hate it too. As for the power armor, it just doesn't fit with the movie. A big part of the movie was showing how overconfident the military was in tackling the bug menace when in reality they were completely outclassed and really only turned the tide by accidentally stumbling upon a brain bug. The power armor would make the odds seem less stacked against the humans but I bet the real reason is simply that they couldn't make decent looking power armor using mid 90's CGI technology. I am actually surprised that quite a bit of the SFX still hold up as well as they do.

@alexpiercey: I really wanted to like Tron:Legacy because it is such a neat concept but it just didn't do it for me. The soundtrack is awesome and my favorite( please don't laugh at me) since Space Jam and I hear nothing but good things about the soon to be canceled cartoon.

I've never seen Titanic or Avatar and think both movies look terrible and will never, purposefully, watch them.

The Dark Knight is a boring film. The Dark Knight Rises is awesome!
