Stanton Says Rumor that JOHN CARTER is Over-Budget is a "Lie"

Several rumors were circulating that John Carter was behind scale and massively over-budget (well over $300 million). However, Indiewire reported this on February 17, 2012:

Calling reports about the rumored $300 million budget “a complete and utter lie” (Director Andrew) Stanton insisted the studio was fully behind him: “I want to go completely on record that I literally was on budget and on time the entire shoot. Disney is so completely psyched that I stayed on budget and on time that they let me have a longer reshoot because I was such a good citizen, so I find it ironic that we’re getting accused of the opposite.”

Thats interesting to hear but I don't think its an issue he needed to address why wouldn't you want to say your big CGI fest wasn't created with a huge budget makes it seem like it'll be better if it is

Maybe he should have gone over budget so the movie wouldn't look like shit.

interesting point. But the rumors were really going after him and his directing, so I don't blame him for taking it as a personal attack.

It has a rumored $250 million dollar budget, so it's still pretty hefty even if it didn't go over.

They were throwing money at Green Lantern just weeks before release and it didn't help any. (source: Collider)

What'd you expect him to say? "Yeah we went tens of millions of dollars over budget, we had to schedule a bunch of re shoots, and the movie is a goddamn mess put together by Disney damage control. I hope it makes its money back or I'll never direct again!"

John Carter could be good or bad, we won't know the truth until the critics start publishing their reviews. We definitely won't find out anything truthful from behind the scenes for a while. For now, its all spin.

I think they must have dropped the ...OF MARS from the title once MARS NEEDS MOMS took a giant shit at the box office.

You know how those Hollywood types are with their rationalisation of idiotic ideas.

it made over $53 million in the US alone on its opening weekend, which is pretty impressive for a movie that was a joke a year before its release. Still, that is only because they spent so much on advertising, money they will have a tough time making back.

A good theory. Mark Strong said, no joke, that it was because "John Carter (the character) has to earn that title." Then some marketer said that they had originally planned on it being THE PRINCESS OF MARS but then they realized guys wouldn't see it and that is when they came up with JOHN CARTER OF MARS. But then that guy said that girls wouldn't see that movie so they went with JOHN CARTER.

Whatever their reasons, they haven't come up with a title that will get people to see the movie. lol

It was a cheap shot at the movie looking terrible, not something I think would actually make it look better.
