I completely agree. (although I really hate when someone starts a thread off by not saying anything)

I think people had 5 stars in their heads before ever seeing the movie. It's well made, has good CG, and completely lacks any substance. Look out for my review, coming hopefully tonight. (Spoiler: 3 out of 5)

@gangly: So is it as good as Iron Man 1 or so and so like Iron Man 2?

@Alien: Can you give us reasons why you feel this way? Have you seen the movie already? Write a review and tell us.

Definitely better than IM2, not nearly as good as IM1. What made Iron Man 1 great, was the depth of how Tony Stark changes into the hero. The great effects and great jokes and everything just amplified that simple character story. The Avengers isn't bad at all. It's just that it has all the same great effects, jokes, and everything else, without anything else to fall back on. A pointless villain makes pointless destruction and characters that we already know beat people up.

Basically, it's entertaining, but hollow. The kind of flick that you're enjoying while you're in the cinema, but when you walk out, you're hard pressed to really remember what happened.

I've heard of plenty of people who were not excited at all to only moderately excited about the movie who ended up loving it, so I don't know that it's a fair assumption to say that the praise it's getting is all due to some sort of feverish hype train.

Very true, and I agree. It's a very likeable summer blockbuster, even for folks who don't instantly have to change their pants at the thought of Iron Man talking to Captain America in a movie. (although I know a lot of people are that way) ;)

Like I said above, there are lots of good effects and humor. It's just that for me at least, there needs to be some drama or some stakes to really get into what's going on, and The Avengers lacks that completely.

@gangly: Just out of curiosity, which of the past Marvel movies do you feel had that level of drama you mentioned? I'm wondering where you would rank The Avengers compared to all the other recent Marvel films. Obviously below Iron Man 1, but how about Thor, Spiderman or any of the multitude of X-Men flicks?
