This is why I ignore "Oscar Rage"

I understand that the Oscars aren't perfect and their nominations will obviously some movie fans. But of course this outrage always goes too far, between people who think Drive deserves every nomination all the way to this.

It's a snippet from an interview with Daniel Radcliffe where he talks about not being surprised that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 wasn't nominated for Best Picture. But the article goes on to say the movie was snubbed. Snubbed? Really?

Don't get be wrong, I am a huge Harry Potter fan, saw all the movies in theaters, and thought this last one was one of the best. But Best Picture? Honestly?

So you're ignoring Oscar Rage by starting a thread telling us you're kinda raging about Oscar Rage?

Some people who aren't part of the academy also have bad opinions, therefore the academy is the best option.

The academy had a hard enough time accepting lord of the rings till the last film. And that was a revered book series. There's no way they would have ever accepted harry potter since they view it as a children's series.

Oscars are the politics of Hollywood. Just because your popular doesn't mean you win.

@Hawkeye: Don't question the mod! Just saying in general that whenever I here about snubs or outrage it just leads to stuff like this and it ruins the idea of award critiques. We complain about the Oscars not reflecting the best in movies then we complain that Harry Potter deserves a spot.

@ScanCase: Even if they did except it, its not like that last film was Godfather Redux (patent pending).

OSCAR RAAAAAAAGEEEEEEE.

I don't know: if the Ides of March can get nominated, it doesn't seem insane to think that out of 10 films, one of them could be one of the best reviewed of the year. Seriously, Ides of March had like two good scenes, and they were both speeches. Especially considering what it could've been, it doesn't deserve anything but "Most Disappointing." Also, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Fucking really? And this is just one category.

This is I ignore the Oscars. Or at least try to. Movie websites have a weird habit of giving them way more attention then they're worth.

WHERE THE HELL IS FAST FIVE

Post by Ferg (503 posts) See mini bio

I was planning on doing an article for the college magazine with title of 'Awards: Do they really matter?' or something along those lines. Unfortunately I missed the meeting and I'm going to review The Descendants instead. What could have been!

I've grown to realize I have a very perticular taste in movies, so I don't often care about most peoples opinions. If anything bothers me, it could be the worst movie I've seen that year (Fast Five comes to mind). If one single fragment gets it's claws into me, it can be the greatest thing I've ever seen (Such as, say, Bronson. I love that movie).

So that's why I detach myself to anything named "Oscars" or "movie reviews"... I don't care.

All I'm saying is, replace Extremely Annoying and Incredibly Tasteless, The White Help, and Moneyball in Best Picture with Take Shelter, Drive, and Melancholia and I'm a happy camper!

Honestly, I stopped caring the year when Return of the King won all the Oscars in 2004. That's when I was like, "Is this a joke?" and got interested in the political shenanigans. That pissed me off for some reason, especially seeing American Splendor's script snubbed, Triplets of Belleville's song snubbed, every technical award should've gone to Master and Commander, and Lost in Translation or City of God should've won in the other categories.

I'm not American, so I don't know baseball puns! :( And that movie is NOT friendly to non-baseball fans, it's like half the movie was in a different language.

I think that, as we discussed on the podcast, the Academy often makes the best choices out of any major awards show. It is, by and large, fairly conservative, and that's why you see things like Drive sometimes falling by the wayside (it is, in many ways, a largely experimental film that many people dislike). Sometimes it makes bad choices (Crash, good lord), but for the most part its track record is far, far better than, say, the Grammys.
