I will state this right now - there is nothing better than an epic trailer. In fact, there are sometimes I wish there would be movies that were made as just to be trailers, nothing more, nothing less. Then, there would never be any disappointment. I guess on the other hand there would never be the joy of a great movie either, which would be more than sad, but I still like this idea.

My experience with Superman is mostly limited to Smallville (which I love), so I would say I am anything but an expert. However, from the look of this trailer, this could be the Superman film that people have been wanting for a long time. We get the sense it will be more of an origin story that will explore the roots of how a Clark Kent actually became the superhero and the struggles he had when he did.

The trailer looks like it has Snyder's slick visual style and might actually get into some deep character development, which is something his previous films have been lacking. It feels like Christopher Nolan's producer credit can definitely be felt in this film as he helps shape the reboot into something more similar to The Dark Knight trilogy.

All I can say, is...I'm in.

Looks like another Hans Zimmer soundtrack I'll be purchasing. Also the music with Lisa Gerrard singing felt like Gladiator all over again.

Awesome. Can't wait for it next year!

I've talked about this so many times on the podcast but this movie is such a big question mark for me. I watch it and think "Okay this seems different, I'm getting some fairly decent Supermany tones from it," and then there will be one thing that makes me go "Ooooooh, noooooooooo." And honestly the cinematography is not helping. This is Superman, its supposed to be all about hope and justice, but everything looks so brown and shadowy, it doesn't match the feeling you should get.

That being said there is enough in this trailer to make me think it has the potential to be a very good film, and even a very good Superman film, but there's also enough there to send me in the opposite direction.

yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes exactly this.

One thing I will point out is I never got a sense of scale from the trailer. The sweeping shots in the dark knight rises trailer give a very real sense of place, whereas most of the shots here are tight and soft. The cinematography is not just brown and shadowy, it's intense: it doesn't give Superman the room to breathe. It feels strangely disconnected when he actually flies through the air, at no point did I go FUCK YEAH SUPERMAN. Whereas you look at the avengers trailer, you're fuck yeahing all the way.

The film could be good, and it has potential, but it feels muted, and for all these parental and personal lines that get said, I feel no connection to superman from the trailer. But we'll just wait and see.

Honestly, it looked different enough to be interesting so I'll probably be in.

@obscurefan: @Tylea002: I really liked the Avengers, but cinematography wasn't its strongest aspect. It looked like a bigger budgeted tv show to me.

Superman hasn't had a good movie in a long time, and this looks pretty good right now so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

@cmpLtNOOb: For a feel good, fuck yeah Super Hero movie, the cinematography was spot on. That single shot with all the heroes fighting together is probably my pick for shot of the year. That or the shot inside the car that got turned over, both from The Avengers. I thought the cinematography was exactly what it needed to be, cool but never distracting, and always emphasising the heroes.

I'm actually kind of interested. The perfume ad sensability to it is definatly a unique style but not sure if that will help as the movie goes on.

I would have to say that the cinematography looks like it could be the most interesting aspect of the film. I`m definitely in.

I'm glad they didn't go for that moment of scale. I appreciated the restraint they showed because that I want the movie to show me the scale, most trailers do that too much, which is just them showing off all the money shots. The focus is more on Clark Kent and the story that will be told about his journey. The cinematography I think reflects more of the different place the world is at than the previous Superman films. The Avengers' trailer was extremely formulaic, it was set piece, set piece, and all the big shots of all this action, and the movie was lucky enough to have a few more surprises because if it didn't, I would of found those big action set pieces to be more disappointing.

I too am looking forward to the movie, however I can't get past the fact that Henry Cavill looks and is dressed as the most Unsuperman Superman I've ever seen..

I just don't like the costume!

This is generally why I don't watch trailers, but I guess what I meant was it all felt fake, all the shots felt composed digitally and made just so, and I didn't get the sense of yes, that is superman, he is flying and that's awesome: I got the sense of yes, someone CGI'd superman flying. It's a problem in a lot of Snyder's work, with his heavily digital style, and I'm sure it'll come across better in the final film, but it's more that the shots felt... off to me.

Post by RockinKemosabe (884 posts) See mini bio

@Tylea002: They probably felt off because they aren't completely finished. I imagine most of the CG were in the state of "good enough for a two and a half minute trailer." Plus I feel that all movies that are heavily reliant on CG never look good in such a condensed timespan, you need to be watching the movie that have stuff sort of wash over you. Like the CG in the Iron Man 3 trailer looks completely fake. And of course, you got the sense that someone CG'd Superman flying, because it is a comic book movie and it's just a natural human sensation that your brain doesn't readily accept that he's flying cause we can't fly, it's why they created the phrase "a suspense of disbelief."

@RockinKemosabe: Let's hope so, hopefully watching the film it all clicks into place, and I'm in it in the moment. The CG doesn't need to be good for me to suspend my disbelief - I can do that with the worst effects, because that's more done by character work and general tone, and I wasn't drawn in by the tone of the trailer. But it is just a trailer based on a CG heavy movie that probably has most CG shots unfinished at this time, so who knows which way it could go. Hopefully it all turns out awesome.

@Tylea002: The thing is, Superman is an alien, so I don't think we're suppose to ever feel a connection to him. Maybe it's just how they threw the trailer together, I don't know.

I'm cautiously optimistic for this film. I really liked Henry Cavill in The Tudors and I think he will make a fine Superman here. I'm wondering what the split will be for the young/adult Superman sections of the film. Maybe the young parts will be flashbacks, though that could backfire in a hurry. I think Nolan producing may help reign in Snyder a bit. In fact, not a whole lot screams Snyder to me other than the CG.

I'll admit it: the music in the trailer gave me goosebumps.

That aside, I am not sure how I feel about this movie as a whole. This trailer has me more interested in the movie than the teasers did, but I haven't liked any of the Snyder movies I have seen. To be fair, I've only seen 300 (which I thought was kinda meh, but I saw it years after it came out and it was monstrously overhyped by then) and Sucker Punch (which was terrible), but I don't see how his style in those movies can translate well into a Superman film.

Superman is back it seems! (and Zod!)

I'm finally pumped for this reboot!

I just don't like the costume!

first off, you are showing a production still, which is not a good way to judge the costume, since they are going to use cinematography and CGI to touch it up. this is what it looks like in the movie:

Henry Cavill as Superman
Henry Cavill as Superman

And that is totally badass! Superman's costume always looked a little dumb, and this new costume doesn't. It keeps all the important aspects of the original (the S, the cape, the color scheme) and updates it. Its fantastic.
