The new trailer for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby was released today. This 3D take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic looks to be a flashy, modernist take on the source material. There's a lot of potential riding on the cast of this adaptation, and I am excited to see more.

This looks great. I really liked the trailer music.

I too am way on board with this adaptation. Seeing lots of people on the internet trashing it for looking gaudy and empty-headed.

Um ... it's Baz. Of COURSE it's gaudy and empty-headed. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

@litrock: People bashing it clearly half-remember the story from high school. It's a story about lavish excess at every turn - who knows excess better than Luhrmann?

@Brewmaster_Andy: Sure, though at the same time it's about the emptiness of those excesses. And its emotional drama is fairly restrained compared to Baz's trademark 'YELL ALL THE EMOTIONS'. Which is fine, I'm really looking forward to it, but man ... people need to let go.

@litrock: Yeah, agreed on that point. I'm looking more on a superficial level in terms of what the arguments have been. People have decried Luhrmann for no real reason. Gatsby should be flashy, as long as that flash is backed up by the in-depth character arcs that the story demands. Gatsby is one of my favorite novels to teach so I hope he does it justice.

I think it looks entertaining. Not so sure on Tobey Maguire, he could be the weak spot in the film. And I was surprised the trailer said "from the director of Romeo + Juliet" not Moulin Rouge.

I don't care about the 3D at all but I've been waiting for a trailer since I found out Luhrmann was doing this. Rome+Juliet is watchable, and I love Moulin Rouge. I don't get people complaining about how pretty it looks the whole book was about the shallowness of all the pretty stuff.

This movie looks incredibly boring.

I read The Great Gatsby in High School, like most other people, and nothing about that story screamed for a film adaptation. I know there was an older version with Sam Waterson, but I don't recall that being particularly thrilling either.

I fucking hate Baz Luhrmann and his commitment to non-naturalism. His exaggeration in his visuals, making every frame seem like a comic on LSD is such a turn off, and clearly a distraction from his inability to portray realistic human emotions.

It felt like a GTA IV trailer.
