It's been a few weeks since Prometheus came out and since then I kept thinking about how happy I was that I saw outer space, even for only a few minutes. New uninhabited worlds, it got me jonesing for more space sci-fi movies. The sci-fi genre has been stuck on Earth for far too long. It's costly to make those movies, but it's the reason why I've gravitated strongly to films like the new Star Trek and Avatar, and TV shows such as Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. So I'd really like sci-fi movies return to outer space. Perhaps we don't see as many space movies because the general populace isn't so enamoured with space travel, given the status of NASA, as it was during the space race in the sixties and the extraordinary popularity of Star Wars in the late 70s and 80s.
It'd be nice to see a resurface of westerns. Cowboys & Aliens didn't really light up the box office (it was a better western than sci-fi movie) and it'll be interesting to see how Django Unchained and The Texas Ranger do popularity-wise. They'll probably be both hits but whether they'll reignite the genre remains to be seen. Honestly, the last western I really enjoyed was 3:10 to Yuma.
Which genres would you like to see make a comeback?
