Which Genre Do You to Make a Comeback?

It's been a few weeks since Prometheus came out and since then I kept thinking about how happy I was that I saw outer space, even for only a few minutes. New uninhabited worlds, it got me jonesing for more space sci-fi movies. The sci-fi genre has been stuck on Earth for far too long. It's costly to make those movies, but it's the reason why I've gravitated strongly to films like the new Star Trek and Avatar, and TV shows such as Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. So I'd really like sci-fi movies return to outer space. Perhaps we don't see as many space movies because the general populace isn't so enamoured with space travel, given the status of NASA, as it was during the space race in the sixties and the extraordinary popularity of Star Wars in the late 70s and 80s.

It'd be nice to see a resurface of westerns. Cowboys & Aliens didn't really light up the box office (it was a better western than sci-fi movie) and it'll be interesting to see how Django Unchained and The Texas Ranger do popularity-wise. They'll probably be both hits but whether they'll reignite the genre remains to be seen. Honestly, the last western I really enjoyed was 3:10 to Yuma.

Which genres would you like to see make a comeback?

I would love the monster movie genre to comeback. My first blockbuster movie was Jurassic Park and I would like to see more movies like that. The good news is that Jurassic Park 4 just got some screenwriters. I couldn't be more happy.

I would agree with you on the space movies. Earth really is starting to get boring. I would also like to see some ambitious like the first Alien.

Western movies, that are gritty, and realistic. 3:10 to Yuma, and the True Grit remake were excellent movies, and I would love to see more movies like that.

@Acura_Max: I'm not entirely on board with another Jurassic Park book, especially now that Crichton has passed away, but hiring the writers behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a step in the right direction. Mostly because that movie was fantastic, one of the best genre movies of last year.

I wouldn't mind another 2+ hours long life crime film in the vein of Goodfellas or maybe just a really good and focused crime film with good dialogue because while Drive was good it's dialogue was very sparse

This.

They are a great combination of story, action, and subdued performances when done right.

Not a genre, and also not a possibility, but Old Star Trek. With people standing around on the bridge talking. The JJ Abrams stuff is something completely different, and has not stood up to rewatches anywhere near as even Nemesis.

I miss it. I miss it hard.

@Tylea002: I would like some old school feeling sci-fi. But I guess with things like Falling Skies and Terra Nova we do have something out there.

Westerns. The cowboy was once a symbol of America and I grew up loving cowboys. The cowboy has almost completely disappeared from the pop culture lexicon and I think it's about time he made a comeback. Hopefully Disney's The Lone Ranger won't be another John Carter style flop for them (even though they're making a fortune off home video sales).

Westerns definitely: for the above reasons.

I also would love cyberpunk to make a return to form. Blade Runner, and The Matrix are 2 of my favourite movies.
