I know that this movie didn't get the greatest of critical reception when it was first released, but it holds up surprisingly well. As a period piece it seems to avoid the cheap feel a lot of 80's period pieces seem to have, and in particular has a fantastic score reminiscient of classics like The Third Man.  The twist is kind of telegraphed (what gumshoe noir's twist isn't though?), but De Niro and Rourke turn out performances far better than they have any right to be, along with a disturbingly sensual performance by Lisa Bonet fresh off The Cosby Show.  The pervasive atmosphere is the real star though, with a real sense of smothering heat to the New Orleans scenes. Its a fun title definitely worthy of netflixing, anybody else have any opinions on it? Love it or hate it?

Love it. It's use of sound is haunting and the storytelling keeps you on your toes from beginning to end. As you said, masterly performances from both De Niro and Rourke that truly shows their skills as character actors. I was quite young when I first saw Angel Heart, so the violence and horror crept up on many a night. Since then I've seen it several times, and as I now study film and television, I've grown much more fond of it. I recommend it to everyone who likes noir and horror, and it truly shows Rourke at his pinnacle in his career.

Love it.

Even just on a visual level I think this movie was way ahead of its time. It seemed to pre-date the style that David Fincher ushered in with SE7EN.

And that last shot of the baby still chills me to the fucking bone.

A great movie but the name Louis Cyphre is about as obvious as Alucard.  Now to make this low class I must say that Lisa Bonet is the hottest chick with hairy armpits.

I love that film. Mickey Rourke was quite a handsome man. Alan Parker is a great director. The book it's based on is even better.

I dug it when it came out...have not seen it in a long time. And I am kinda sure, that if I would watch it now, it would not be so awesome...
