So I happened to be up at 3 in the morning the other night, and happened to catch a wonderful horror gem on the SyFy channel. It seemed like the quality of a SyFy original movie, but when I finally found a recognizable actor and looked it up on IMDB, I found out that it was actually made to come out for theater release, but they sent it straight to video instead. Which is good since the film has many shots of the World Trade Centers, deals with a New York City highrise, possible terrorism in that highrise, people jumping out of buildings (or being tossed out in this case, by an Elevator), and oh, did I mention it was supposed to come out the weekend before 9/11? It did however play at the May 2001 Cannes film festival. Yes, THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL. Curious by all this, I watched on.
Down is about a killer elevator. Yes, those vertical machines that take people up & down buildings that looks suspiciously like the Empire State Building. In it, Michael Ironside has created something called a Bio-Chip, which is basically a human brain mixed with a computers. Ironside then puts it in an elevator. Thus, the elevator turns evil, and then starts randomly killing people. They don't even have to be inside the elevator. At one point, the elevator sucks a guy sitting near it into it with its evil powers.
It's actually a really entertaining film in that usual SyFy way. It has cheesy showings from Ron Pearlman, Michael Ironside etc. It also features Naomi Watts in a role somehow perfect for the film, but one that also makes you question how this is even the same person that was once nominated for an Oscar, and has had several critically-loved performances.
Overall, if you ever come across this movie, you should be entertained in some fashion. In either case, you can marvel at the film's strange existence. Also, it has an Elevator that kills people.
