South Park has a specific sense of humor that has found creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker loads of success and given them lots of opportunities to go away from their crude animations and jokes and try something else. But before South Park was a behemoth it is today, challenging the Simpsons throne of animation dominance, Stone and Parker were already flexing their comedic funny bones in other ways. BASEketball took the comedy forces of Stone and Parker and teamed them up with director David Zucker, the who is best known for Airplane!, The Naked Gun movies, and Scary Movie 3 and 4. Stone and Parker play Joe Cooper and Doug Reemer, friends since they were kids the two were inspired by their sports heroes to one day achieve greatness through athletic feats. Unfortunately as the two grew up sports stopped being about being athletic and started being about money. Athletes would move cities, sell products, and anything else to make extra money. After a high school party, and not realizing that they are utter losers, the two are challenged by another pair of guys to a game of basketball but when the two bros are obviously much better Cooper and Doug make a game up on the spot that requires almost no talent and lets anybody play and win.
That new game, called BASEketball obviously, blows up from a popular driveway game into a league with Cooper and Doug turning into superstars and the league following strict rules so BASEketball doesn't turn into every other sport. The movie has an Airplane! sort of feel to it, lingering shots for comedic effect, and the biting humor is pure Stone and Parker. The movies chooses to never take it self to seriously, in fact in one scene where Cooper and Doug are having a fight and a few other characters walk into the locker room to reveal more problems for the two, Stone and Parker are given huge penises. I'm talking 4 feet long, and really who wouldn't? If you're making a movie, of course you give yourself a huge penis. So if you're into huge penises, or maybe just South Park kinda of humor, then try BASEketball out.
