Two gems that I have been thinking about recently in planning for my film studies course next year.
The Salton Sea comes at the tail end of a slew of drug-culture films including 1996's Trainspotting and 2000's Traffic and Requiem for a Dream, but it stands out in my mind for Val Kilmer's great performance as a man sinking slowly into the dope game after the death of his wife. It's one of the few movies of my teenage years that I still come back to and enjoy.
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys is another one that got overlooked upon its release, but quickly became one of my favorites. It's hard to find a true comparison for the film but it reminds me a lot of Ghost World and older nostalgia flicks like The Sandlot. There's something about the portrayal of youth in this film that just seems unmatched, but quirky enough to be entertainment.
