You Mean I Have To Pay THAT For Sleuth???

Amazon and eBay both demand anywhere between $65 to $100 for a copy of the original Sleuth on DVD???  It's the only movie of my top favorites I do not own and dear god I can't afford that just for a DVD!!  I assume it was printed in limited quantity for region 1 release because in Europe it sells like any other DVD.  Still, it is ridiculous.

Sleuth is a movie that gets a lot of flak for the remake (though I didn't think it was that bad).  It is one of Michael Caine's early greats and an amazing film.  I would call it a fantastic hidden gem.  Now if only a basic DVD copy of it was available at basic DVD price in America, then I'll be happy.

So for the hell of it, what favorite movies were YOU asked to pay waaaay to much for (sarcasm welcome).

I am completely with you on the Sleuth pain.  It's one of my favorite movies and it hasn't been released on DVD since around 1999, possibly 2002.  It was the most requested movie back when TCM.com had a feature where users could request classic movies to be released on DVD.  Not sure what happened there.  I know Michael Caine's in every movie ever, but it's Caine + Olivier.  How can people who release DVDs not realize how awesome that is?

@Vichyssoise: Glad to know someone shares my pain on this.  Caine is my favorite actor and to put hin with Olivier in a movie like Sleuth... people just don't give it enough respect.

Are you sure there isn't a place selling it cheaper. I found it for 19$ here in Norway with relative ease.

Edit: Sorry, didn't read the OP carefully enough. Apparently it's easy to find in Europe. Weird though.

Had a similar problem when buying Battle Royal a few years ago. I couldn't find a copy that was region free. But I finally found one and had to spend 35 bucks and then some for a used movie. When I got it I found out the seller lied and it was region encoded. So I had a choose to either spend another 60 bucks to get a dvd player that could play it or resell it and search for another one. I ended up buying the dvd player and that was the only use it got for a while but now I find reasons to use it. Alright done rambling

@GreatestEver99: One of the reasons I don't buy foreign DVDs online anymore (had this problem with the original Get Carter).  I tend to hunt them down in independent stores over online buying now.

@TearsInRain: Yeah I seen the movie online from a friend recommendation and loved it and it turned into a 2 month long quest to get that movie. Yeah I rarely buy online because there is a nice used media store where I live and I can walk out with 10 decent and sometimes great movies and only spend 20-30 bucks.

@GreatestEver99: Same story with me.  I have a store I go to where you can get 7 movies for $15 used.

I would suggest going to places that sell used dvd's, especially ones that don't necessarily specialize in movies. Some stores, if it's not in there system, you might be able to pick it up for under $5.

Holy crap, you aren't kidding! And movie studios wonder why piracy runs rampant...

@pat4327: It leads certain people who are desperate to see it again to do things illegally.  Money can be a bitch.

There are certain things on Amazon that are inexplicably expensive. It make sense why the Kirk chair would be $3,000, but $499 for Super Mario World? I guess it's worth it because that's the best Mario game of all time but still, damn.

@Pickle: You can get it used at a retro gaming store for around $5.

I'm gonna go ahead and mention Disney classic movies. It feels like i'm getting mugged every time I buy one. I spent 30 dollars a piece for Toy Story 1 and 2 on blu-ray and there ten year old movies but I only payed 20 For the third one. When The Lion King is released on Blu-Ray towards the end of the year i'll pay there ridiculous price it as well.

@Mistress_Redhead: Sleuth isn't Sherlock Holmes.  You're thinking of Without A Clue.

@Mistress_Redhead: I was adding a bunch of dvds to the site yesterday and stumbled on a couple more Disney classics getting re-released that I didn't know about. Check out this listing for Dumbo on Blu-Ray. Its list price is 40 dollars. 40 dollars for an hour long not that great Disney classic.
