So if you popped into the New Years resolution thread at all you may have seen that one of my resolutions is to read more books this year.

In years past I have been a downright bookworm and in fact sitting next to me and this small desk is an overflowing bookcase. Despite the volume of books I have mostly read them all, save for a gift or two from years past, and I'm looking for something new.

And now I come to you, the great Pups of Screened to suggest books. I'm open to most suggestions and most kinds of books but you can safely guess that romance novels won't be suggestions I'll listen to.

Fire away!

I'm also looking for books. If you guys find anything I would like to know too. So far I have read the first page of a book called "Freedom" by John Frazen

My Suggestions

  1. Ready Player One - It is the book that every nerd should read, especially if you are affluent in 80's culture. If you're not, it's still awesome.
  2. Dune - A classic.
  3. American Gods - I liked the concept of gods in the modern era.
  4. Watchmen (comic book) - Possibly the only comic book to make Time magazine's 100 best books and for good reason.
  5. Eat This not That - Seriously, these books don't work. One time, one of these books told me not to eat nutella because the nutella will force my body to produce estrogen. I mainly just stare at the pictures of the food.

Divisive books

  1. Anything by Ayn Rand
  2. The Casual Vacancy

Random Books I heard about/read

1. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - I heard this book was amazing. So far there are about 600 requests for this book at my local library system. That's alot considering that most movies and books usually get about 300 requests when they are just released. I don't know much about it, but B&N says that it's suspenseful and is about a marriage gone wrong.

2.Feminist Ryan Gosling: Feminist Theory (as Imagined) from Your Favorite Sensitive Movie Dude - Yup, Ryan Gosling wrote a book about feminism and that's actually the full title on Amazon. I scrolled through the book and he begins every page with the phrase "Hey girl..." I didn't get all the jokes and he made alot of references to people I don't know about. Here's a sample joke:

Hey Girl...
I mean Woman

3. Go the F*ck to Sleep - A short, lovely book of poems that every parent can relate to. Here is a sample joke:

The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest
And the creatures who crawl, run and creep.
I know you're not thirsty. That's bullsh*t. Stop lying.
Lie the f**k down, my darling, and sleep.

I've been trying to read more books as well over the last few months. It's been going kinda slow though so I'm afraid I don't have too many suggestions.

The Last Wish and Blood Of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski- Otherwise known as the Witcher books that the games are based on. No knowledge of the games is required though as the books are set before the games.

Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds- Is the first novel in part of a larger series. I've only just started this recently but it's really great so far.

Air Force Gator by Dan Ryckert- If you're ever in the mood for really stupid dumb fun then this is the book for you. I'm actually quite surprised at how much I legitimately enjoyed it.

These next few books are ones that were recommended to me that sounded interesting.

A Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge

The Hyperion series by Dan Simmons

I second this.

As much as I enjoy the movie, FIGHT CLUB, is still one of my all time favourite books and is still enjoyable if you have seen the movie.

With the GREAT GATSBY movie coming out soonish, i would also recommend it as well.

Those are my maintwo I try to get everyone to read...

Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks is my favourite sci-fi novel. If you choose to go for it I recommend that you also pick up it's more personal (and much stranger) companion piece and sort-of sequel Look To Windward. Avoid spoilers on Look To Windward.

Someone up above said Dune. You should probably read Dune

I am a big fan of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It's up to 14 books (the last one released late November), but I highly recommend them. A lot of fun.

I'm currently reading through the Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft. I've been reading the collection on and off since October, and I'm still only 67% through, according to my Kindle. It's pretty good stuff, there is just a lot of it.

Finally, in the last few months Brandon Sanderson has become a favorite author of mine. His Mistborn trilogy is great, but if you aren't ready to dive into a fantasy series, Legion is a very entertaining novella.
