I'll echo many of the statements here in that I can see where the guy is coming from, but in my personal opinion those tangential aspects are part of what makes the show great.
I was amazed they gave The Apple Sisters so much attention. Everyone in the comments hated them. They're a bunch of screeching harpies constantly yelling "It's 1942" at you. AVClub gave them so mich positive press that I gave them a try. It made me want to stab my eardrums with ice picks.
