I don't tend to talk about my personal life much but to me this is special and I feel Screened has become a big part of my life, I want to talk about it. Six months ago I married the most beautiful woman I have met. Our journey from dating to marriage was a long process and I doubt either of us knew it would end up here when we started dating.
My wife and I met at a summer Biology course at the community college in our hometown in 2004. I was wrapping up my last class before transferring to a four year school and she was getting a lab class out of the way for her school. The course was only four weeks long and we didn't even start talking until near the end. The thing that brought us together: I happened to be wearing an old X-Files shirt and once she mentioned how much she loved the show, we got to talking. I later was helping her out some (perhaps flirting too) while we were dissecting fetal pigs (romantic, I know!) when I decided to ask her for her number and then out on a date in the same night. This was not like me at all as I am somewhat introverted and hadn't dated anyone in a few years. Our first date was seeing I, Robot (again with the romance) and after a few more dates we made it official. Our dilemma: we both were leaving for our respective schools in a few weeks. I was going to the Illinois/Iowa border and she was going back to Massachusetts. We both decided we would try to make it work though neither of us had ever done long distance before. I think we were both scared (at least I know I was) at the prospect but excited at the same time. I knew right away she was different though I couldn't figure out why.
To make a long story short, we endured weeks without seeing one another and the phone became our way of communicating with one another. After 3 years of dating, she had graduated and came back to Chicago for grad school. The experience was short lived, however, as she accepted a contracting position in Salem, MA for a small publishing company. I, unfortunately, was laid off of work shortly before she left in early 2009 but I encouraged her to go as I knew it would be temporary and it was a great opportunity for her. I visited a couple of times and almost moved out there until I found work and she knew she would be coming home at the end of the summer. We continued dating until May 2010 when I proposed. We were married on September 3, 2011 in a beautiful outdoor ceremony surrounded by family and friends and had a fantastic honeymoon in Italy.
While we have had our share of ups and downs, we always managed to work through them and come out stronger as a result. Perhaps this isn't the best place to write about it but this is my blog after all, so screw it. She doesn't come to this site but I just want to say how much I love her and that not a day goes by I don't regret being with her. My life has been better with her in it and I can never thank her enough.
