Here's the deal, Hollywood creates summer films ( blockbuster action films, one-off comedies, and useless rom-coms) to make money. The summer means "money" for Hollywood and they want to cash in. They don't care what they put out, as long as it makes money. People go see these "summer films" because its something to do. They don't care what they're watching as long as its moving images and crappy dialogue (don't forget the explosions).
Sadly, Hollywood is smart about one thing. They know that people are idiots, mindless sheep, that will go see anything with a flashy trailer and 100 million dollar budget. Then, when people walk out of the film they usually say "Well... it was a good 'summer' movie." And that's where Christopher Nolan, our savior, comes in. In 2008 he created a film that was above the use of that phrase in The Dark Knight. A movie that has as much emotional depth as it did action. A "smart" summer movie was finally created and it made 1 billion dollars. If that wasn't enough, Nolan came back with another smart blockbuster in 2010 with Inception. Inception completely solidified the fact that smart, well made movies can be made and released in the summer. These movies can have actual depth, along with elements of a blockbuster.
So therefore, Hollywood should actually try and make smart movies like Nolan and put them in the summer slot so I can actually feel like I didn't just waste 10 bucks. Learn from Nolan, and all will be well. While I'm not expecting Hollywood to go art house (although that would be hilarious), I would like to see something that smart people can enjoy. Something with a plot, a confusing plot... I don't care, just do it.
P.S. I will not comment on my opinions of The Avengers or The Amazing Spider-Man publicly as it would be a waste of my time.
