Next Wednesday I'll be heading out to Austin for SXSW, and staying for about a week. We're not covering the festival this year as Screened coverage, but I had a great time out there last year and wanted to bring my wife back and check out some movies and music just for fun. I'll probably write a few blog posts and post a few pictures or something.

Anywho, I haven't a good chance to really look over the schedule -- probably going to do that this weekend -- but I wanted to know if anybody has heard anything great about any specific movies or bands playing. Give me a good starting point for planning my schedule.

I know on the 14th that Fidlar is performing a set along with Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) at Shangri La, that's definitely worth checking out (both awesome bands). Is Lana Del Rey still performing at SXSW, or did she pull out of that appearance? That would've been an odd show to see.

Awesome. I'm not familiar with this years line-up but have fun.

Cloud Nothings! Seriously, they're amazing. Their newest album, Attack on Memory, is my favourite of the year besides Perfume Genius's. A$AP Rocky, Youth Lagoon and The Shins!

The new Bobcat Goldthwait dark comedy, God Bless America, is playing the festival and looks like it could be pretty good (I thought his last film, World's Greatest Dad, was hilarious, and oddly sweet for a movie with such a fucked up premise). Also, there will be a screening of the old Brazilian cult horror film This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse with a live guitar score from Gary Lucas, which sounds like it has the potential to be really cool. I remember catching that film late at night on IFC back when I was in high school and thought it was a blast. I haven't read up on much of what's there, so I can't help out too much. Hope you have a lot of fun, though. I think I'm going to try to save up for a trip out there to SXSW or perhaps even Sundance next year, as I've always wanted to attend a film festival but just haven't been able to make it happen yet.

Edit: I just realized that it wasn't This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse that I saw on IFC so many years ago, but At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul. Both are Coffin Joe films; kind of easy to confuse the two when it's been so long. It still sounds like it'll be awesome, though.

@JoeyF:

A friend helps orginize these shows. Lots of great bands.

Not sure if they're screening this but worth a watch:

I can't wait to see this. I've seen Pentagram twice now and they're incredible live. Particularly the show they played at Maryland Deathfest in 2010 was beautiful to behold... him healthy, thousands of fans going nuts, and all sorts of bands from the festival flocked around the stage in admiration. I don't think I've seen a man as sincerely grateful for all the love and support he's been shown. A true underground legend.

After a quick scan of the schedule here's what I would try and check out:

Indie Game: The Movie

Iron Sky

21 Jump Street

Bernie

The Cabin in the Woods

God Bless America (Bobcat Goldthwait) and Iron Sky (Moon Nazis), please!

Maybe The Cabin in the Woods (Joss Whedon).

Not sure if you left for South By yet, but yeah, I found this video of The Needle Drop's must see artists playing at SXSW, and I pretty much swear by this guy's musical taste, so really any of the bands he recommends seeing are worth looking into. I saw Andrew WK & La Sera this week in San Francisco & they both put on excellent shows (obviously they couldn't be any different musically, but I still enjoyed the raucousness of WK's set and the melodic DIY indie pop of La Sera), so they're worth looking into. Nicolas Jaar, ASAP Rocky, Mobb Deep are worth looking into, as is Class Actress (she does a pretty cool electronica/dance set). Apparently Peelander Z is playing at SXSW, and they're INSANE live (nonsensical J-Rock with a really interactive live show- seen them twice already), so if you get a chance go check them out, but you might scare off your wife a bit :p
