After the success of last year's Terry Tates, I've returned in 2012 to tell you the best and worst ads of the Super Bowl this year, which weren't that great in terms of amount of memorable ads, when last year we had the choice of Eminem saving Detroit, or that Darth Vader kid. So without further adieu, let's pay our respects to the entries into one of America's favorite national hallmarks: The Super Bowl Commercial
Best Ad From Last Super Bowl
"This is the Motor City, and this is what we do." It's more than a commercial, it's a manifesto of defiance that makes America cheer on what is thought of as one of the worst cities in America. Even if you only listened to it, you'd be enraptured by those "Lose Yourself" chords and that perfect narration.
The Worst:
Worst Use of A Mostly Naked Body:
The ladies I talked to didn't like it, I personally don't need to be that close to Beckham's balls, and really, is David Beckham even relevant anymore? Also in contention, Adrianna Lima.
Worst Follow-Up:
Alright, so the first 45 seconds aren't bad, but not exactly memorable, and that Beetle actually looks DAMN fine, but those last 15 seconds calling back to last year's ad was just stupid. People are going to disagree, but this was no means a worthy follow-up to several people's favorite ad last year.
The Company That Needs To Go the F**k Away As Soon As Humanly Possible:
According to USA Today, this is currently the least-liked ad of last night. And really, who can blame them. What may have been edgy and mildly amusing at one point has now evolved to the humor of an extremely retarded 5-year old boy. Of all the companies and .Com's that went out of business over the years, why does GoDaddy still exist? And who the hell is the person that thinks Danica Patrick is still the hottest woman on Earth? Add to that the GoDaddy "Body Paint" ad, and I wanted to stab my eyes out.
Worst Use of A Good Actor:
Alright, so you have Ricky Gervais, who is honestly one of the funniest living human beings if given the chance and right environment. This ad, was not that, because it only uses him for 10 seconds to make a joke about denying a friend request on Facebook. It's better than Mary Louise Parker who didn't have any lines, but still, what a waste. Also in contention, that Elton John Pepsi ad, because What the F**k.
Movie Trailer That Had The Exact Opposite Effect Of Me Wanting To See It:
If there are any good parts of this movie, then Disney is hiding them under a rock on the Moon because they are NOWHERE to be found in these trailers, which so far look like an extended version of the end of Star Wars Episode 2, Attack of the Clones. Then the fact that it split-screens as you're watching it just makes it god-awful.
The Best
Best Use of a Dog Award:
Cute for your girlfriend, hilarious for you. Seriously, dogs were HUGE this year, but WeeGo struck a good balance of everything a commercial featuring a dog should be.
Best Movie Trailer:
For virtually telling us NOTHING about the movie thus far, these Avengers trailers sure got me pumped for this movie. And you don't even have to show that much because just seeing short bursts of this group getting together sure gives me a boner. This is especially crazy since the extended version of this is even better, and all this excitement and they haven't even released a trailer longer than a minute yet.
Best TV Show Ad:
I do not like the actual show, but damn if this wasn't one of the better ads of the night. And it's a Kill Bill parody at that. It's cool, it's funny, and of course, Betty White. "It's about time somebody wanted me for my voice and not my body."
Funniest Ad:
First, it jabs at its competitor in a way that's hilarious. Then there's all the disaster movie imagery with natural disaster, 2012 disaster, alien disaster, and of course, giant robot that looks suspiciously like a Transformer disaster. Then there's the dog. Then there's the frogs. It's just solidly funny all the way around, although M&M's comes in a CLOSE second.
Best Ad:
I honestly thought this was a political ad at first, and to that, I say Eastwood 2012. Because you basically have one of the most bad-ass human beings ever to step on the Earth, and he's giving an awesome, hopeful pep talk about how America is awesome and stuff. The words I have can't do it justice, but the voice and words of Clint F'n Eastwood can. "It's halftime America, and our second half is about to begin." BOOM. Then it comes back from commercial and Halftime begins. Completely, and totally epic. Of course, he's basically saying that America is going to ends in like 2248 or something crazy, but who cares. Clint Eastwood said it, it must be true.
So, all that talk, and no mention of the bland Coke ads, Mathew Broderick, The Soup Nazi or John Stamos, which is a crime really. So right these wrongs and give your opinions on the ads. Were they better in year's past? What are the memorable, funny and awesome ones for you this year? Sound off.
