What are your thoughts on smoking cigarettes?

Just wanted to share my thoughts on smoking cigarettes and other tobacco-related stuff. Being around people who smoke that doesn't bother me up to a point, but I seriously have no desire to smoke at all. In my opinion, If people wanted to damage their sight and lung capacity (and other bodily functions), then that's just their business.

What do you guys think of it? Do any of you smoke at all?

Anti.

Grew up with my parents smoking and while I don't mind being around it I don't understand why anyone does it.

A good friend of mine smoked for about a year and it just seemed like a waste of money and he would always have to go outside in the middle of playing video games or something. Just didn't make sense.

Absolutely anti. I know quite a few people at school who smoke and honestly I think it's disgusting..

I can blow smoke rings so it's worth the cancer.

I don't smoke, and I wouldn't recommend it, but I'll fiercely defend one's right to do so.

I smoke and I love it! Not too much though, maybe 3 a day. I think it's wonderfully relaxing, and pairs beautifully with other calming activities; reading, having a cup o' coffee, etc. In addition I think there's something primally satisfying about breathing in fire and blowing out smoke.

I would say though, that a lot of smokers are assholes. If I take a drag and someone is about to pass me on the street, I never exhale until they're well past me. As long as people don't force me to never smoke (which I guarantee will happen soon enough) I won't force my smoke on them. Live and let die, as the man says. ;)

Uncle John has an opinion too...

I will smoke when drunk, never otherwise. I am drunk only very rarely. I don't get the purpose of smoking, and I find it to be a waste of money and breath, but when drunk and hanging out with friends that smoke I join in because I'd find myself alone for extended stretches otherwise. I suppose I could stand out with them and not smoke, but seeing as I'm drunk I'm therefore not thinking clearly. Perhaps I'm even subconsciously attempting to make myself sick and vomit so I'm not drunk anymore because I hate being drunk, although I've never gotten sick from smoking. Does that really happen to people? It's in the movies and the tv shows so it must be true right?

I'm pro smoker segregation. But otherwise if someone smokes, I don't care.

It leaves you and your breath stinking like shit and your teeth yellow and it ruins your throat. Not to mention the annoying smoke and the gazillion of health-related issues it causes. I hate it.

I think smoking cigarettes is completely disgusting and don't see any point of it but I'm more lenient on those who smoke pot

Smoking is dumb, and utterly disgusting. I feel it's also hypocritical to smoke.

I don't smoke myself but I'm not bothered by people doing so around me although I will admit that growing up going to tiny, smoky clubs to watch bands it's kind of nice to go and not have to air all my clothing out. That being said the ridiculous and misleading extremes the anti-smoking commercials go to and the general ignorant assholishnessness that militant anti-smokers exhibit almost make me want to start smoking.

Care to explain...?

I believe Dr. Hicks can address your concerns...

@gangly: not really, thanks for asking though.

I'm thoroughly enriched by this inspiring discussion. ;)

Really though, welcome to Screened, dude, but seriously, don't post if you have nothing to say. It's needlessly aggravating and adds nothing. We're here to communicate and have fun, not to be petty.

Barf, I don't like it. And I kind of wish that smoking was illegal in bars. I hate smelling terrible every time I go out.

@gangly: HEY COME ON NOW I wasn't being petty i was being vague, my statement was petty, being petty would mean I would fixate on trivial statements made by others (cough), I did post as much as the next guy, by saying I was against smoking, not enough?

I don't care if you smoke, smoke up! enjoy your cigarettes pal, be sure to make light of the consequences while your at it.

I used to smoke for 4-5 years in high school/college. Had to quit for several reasons. Now I'm 8 years removed and I cannot stand the smell. I find it very unattractive and gross.

Smoking is illegal is every indoor area (aside from your home, of course) in Canada. Really sucks going to the bar in winter. Trick is to get drunk enough that the cold doesn't bother you. It's a delicate art.

cigarettes are pretty gross, but if you find the right blend of pipe tobacco that stuff can get pretty tasty. plus it's super inexpensive

Where I live, smoking is illegal in bars and in most public places. I don't consider myself to be a smoker, even though I do smoke cigarettes, cigars and hookah every once in a while. I don't judge smokers, but I do kind of feel sad for some of them. I have friends who have to live on a small budget, and they waste a large portion of that small budget on cigarettes. They then proceed to complain how I can afford to buy 60 euro games once a month, even though they spend that amount on cigarettes each week. I also hate going out to bars with friends who smoke. Every 30 minutes they go have a cig outside and I'm forced to watch our table while they're gone.

But nicotine is relaxing, and can be used in moderation as a drug. I've found myself beginning to get addicted a few times, but the urge has gone away after not smoking anything for a few months.
