I know it's bad for my health but I wouldn't be the only person to be doing it and obviously millions of people enjoy it so when would be a good time for me to start and for what reasons?

Never. You answered your question in the first seven words of your post. Just because others do it doesn't mean you should. Live a healthy live and you'll live longer, and you'll be able to enjoy the extra days they might not.

I guess if you have a terminal illness, there's little harm done. Otherwise, don't start... it ain't worth it.

What kind of a fucking question--

You know what. Never mind. You can't surprise me anymore.

Ok, I know a bunch of people are going to answer the way the above posters have but I know there are people out there that enjoy smoking and have no regrets about doing it.
I mean let's not be so judgemental in here. People drink alcohol and that is bad for you too.

There's a topic in this forum about your favorite drink and we don't get kill-joys in there. Alcohol is glorified by teenagers because of the media. Let's not forget that. It's dangerous too. So unless you don't drink don't come in here espousing the evils of smoking.

@Balls: This seems entirely too clinical a way to start smoking, I'd say that it's something that'll happen if it's going to happen. Most of the people I know that smoke started for stress relief or because the bummed a smoke one too many times while chatting with people and got hooked inadvertently.

@Matt: I guess if I 'm interested in it that's a good enough reason. I guess I was more looking for stories about how people got started smoking.

Why would you start smoking? it has taken me years to quit and my body is going to take years to recover....

when youre 15, because then you can get addicted before you realise that smoking sucks.

What kind of smoking, would be the pertinent question to ask.

My uncle gets a lot of enjoyment out of it and doesn't regret it. I don't know how much he smokes exactly but he loves it!

He smokes a lot of cigars though I think he only smokes cigarettes occasionally.

@Balls: I have an old friend who still takes pills, shoots up heroin and snorts speed and she loves it and gets a lot of pleasure out of it... does not mean its good for her.

Well that's not really a fair comparison. lol! Speed and heroin? That stuff's not even legal? How is that comparable to smoking cigars? You  can't make a good argument if you're going to use so much exaggeration.  :P

@Balls: shrugs drugs are drugs, legal or illegal, if your stupid enough to take up smoking your stupid enough to treat your body like crap.

Well Balls I have to say this, it is admirable how you are still making the same kind of threads just like in the early days of Giantbomb.

I think if you were in Mad Men, then you have the right to smoke as much as you want.

When you're sent to an abandoned mining colony on a "routine mission".

When there's something out there hunting you, and it ain't no man.

One or two drinks every day is beneficial to your health and should have no side effects unless you're really bad with holding your alcohol. One or two cigarettes, however, is still horrific for your health. And, unless you're getting drunk at least once every fortnight or so, alcohol doesn't really have that many adverse effects on the body, whereas smoking is, obviously, horrible. Even more so, the pleasure that nicotine gives doesn't outweigh all the negative impacts of smoking, so if you really wanted it I'd recommend just going out and buying some nicotine gum or a patch.

I sympathize with people who smoke, because it's hard for them to quit. But if you're seriously contemplating starting to smoke, I think it would be for the best if you reevaluated your judgment. Seriously, if you want a buzz just pick up some Nicorette at the pharmacy.

Dude..if u already know that u want to, then do it. Im not gonna give u a lecture on why not to, coz u already know its bad.
Instead Im gonna tell u that i started smoking when i was in final year of med school(a pretty stressful time for most)..however it was occassional, like once in  a month or something..but then I broke up with my GF and then the shit was on..like 2-3 packs of reds a day..however pretty soon i started noticing the side effects..anorexia, weight loss, craving, bad breath..so i cut down to 6-7 sticks a day. Nothing like a relaxing smoke after a long day.
To all those expounding the demerits of smoking, lemme remind u all that we are all mere mortals.
