So What's the Point of Leveling?

Not to get all existential up in here, but why are there levels if they don't help us achieve anything? I mean I think it's kind of fun to gain levels, and that's why I do it, but as far as I know, the only way to reap any kind of benefits is to get enough wikid points to bypass moderation, and that's completely different from leveling.

It's for fun and to look down on people who are lower then you.

@Filmfail:  It's just human nature. We wanna compete. One wants to be better than the rest.  Thats the reason for awards, video game achievements / trophies ..

I think we'd be better off without competition and having records of who's better than whom, but you cant stop the human nature from running wild.

Yeah I lost my desire to do the quests when I realised I was wasting my time. They're a great idea but there needs to be some sort of reward to motivate me to do them.

It's to ensure a constant stream of traffic to the website.

See: any forum thread on any video game website about achievements.

I think this is the correct answer.

So you can become the "chosen one" and have chance to take the red or blue pill

Meh, I don't really care for it. It's neat when I get XP for something accidentally though.

where else besides the Whiskey media sites can you level...the answer is nowhere.

@dvdhaus: All CNET sites have a levelling system. (TV.Com etc...)

Also the point... Fun?

It also ups traffic a little and if, like on Giantbomb, you read the pages you are sent too you can often learn something new about things. Maybe a movie, a person or a concept. Learning something new, keeping people looking through the site and maybe even helping you enjoy your time around here a little more!

Look at things like Xbox Live; most people on there do things for the achievements! It can be fun and it can be tedious, which is why it's optional!

Also, avoiding the mod queue is going to be very useful!

@Stealthoneill:  Well I never went to those other sites.  Giant Bomb was the first site that I encountered that.

And I agree, completing quests hopefully will educated the users and also test their knowledge.

It is pretty rare, but when done right can also lead to a lot of entertainment.

This thread reminds me of that House of the Dead movie that Uwe Boll made where one dude asked the villain why he wanted immortality, and the villain was all like "TO LIVE FOREVER!"

If you see what I'm saying.

The point? I'd say it's to test your knowledge of movies and just for enjoyment.

Its kind of like not wearing underpants, in that a lot people don't necessarily plan to do so but at least once or twice in their life they wake up and go to put their clothes on and go...hang on a second. I think the quests are much the same way. You'll occasionally just be on screened and go...you know what...I bet I could get this quest. There is no reward in either of these activities other than a sense of accomplishment and freedom. It doesn't matter if you do the quests or not because we are a community and as long as we are having fun whilst wearing pants, thats the main thing.
