Go With A Bang Or Fade Away?

In my last blog, I mentioned some of the shows I was looking forward too. Now I'm thinking about some of the shows that I loved, but am starting to grow tired off. In my case these include House and Smallville, now in their seventh and tenth series. Whatever you think of the Lost finale, at least it had an ending and we all knew when that was coming well ahead of time. Stargate SG1 on the other hand felt like it would have been better ending two series earlier. Sure, there were good episodes, but it could never sustain the quality it had in it's peak. Scrubs had a similar problem, it even had a proper finale for series 8 and did a ninth anyway, but had lost it's mojo around series 6.

Then again, NCIS is about to start it's eighth series and it's ratings continue to climb and I'm looking forward to it. So there are exceptions. But on the whole, would TV be better if we knew a show could only ever last a finite number of series? A definite ending would give writers something to aim for and force execs to green-light fresh new shows. But, while these shows may not have their former greatness, some of them, like SG1, were still good, better than a lot of their competition.

So the question is, do we want shows to end while they're great and we have only good memories or do we want them to stick around a little longer, even if the good times are separated by more and more filler episodes?

End while they're great, for sure. I hate when shows over stay their welcome, and just begin to decompose before my eyes. X-Files, The Simpsons, OZ, all shows that should have ended a few seasons earlier.
