It's "Game Over" for both X-Play and Attack of the Show

Before announcing, I'd like to humbly apologize to everyone for the corny-ass title.

Now, we know G4 is already going to die and be reincarnated into a GQ-like channel, but according to G4TV's Website as well as ANN, both X-Play and Attack of the Show are cancelled and will die with G4 after being within the channel since their beginning years. They will hold a two-month celebration until the set day that both shows will end.

To be honest, I don't mind AOTS being killed off since I stopped watching it for 2 or 3 years (minus that one day when one of Joey's crazed-up videos from back then was featured there), but X-Play's death sentence is a low blow. Up until ignoring the better fighting and RPG games from this year, X-Play was actually fun to watch. So, an "I'll miss you" for X-Play and a "Good fucking riddance" for AOTS.

EDIT: Spelling corrections, Added the link to Joey's video and to where I found the news first.

It's not shocking unfortunately after that re-branding got announced.

I'd love to see one of those shows, probably AOTS even though I preferred X-play mainly thanks to Sessler, make it on another network. Spike already has video game programming and I could see FX or TBS also trying to cash in on a younger market.

Not that surprising. After Sessler left X-Play and G4 there was no real reason for me to watch their non convention coverage. Now Spike and the internet have live streams covered. Man this time last year there was that huge rumor that Zuffa was going to by a stake in G4 from NBC Universal and make it their UFC channel.

So it is just going to be 24/7 reruns of Cops, Cheaters, and Blind Date now?

Yeah, up until the GQ-based channel shows up next year, and if that fails to deliver, then one more coffin will be hurling towards the sun faster than expected.

Even when they turn into a GQ-based channel I bet they will still show reruns of Cops, Cheaters, and Blind Date.

Also GQ based? So they are going to be like Spike only more sophisticated? Why dosen't G4 just quit now? They must like flushing money down the toilet.

This was part of something else I wrote about all of this:

This was inevitable, but still sucks since it's the final nail in the coffin that was video game related content on G4 and most of cable tv in general. There were a few years when I could actually watch G4 all day long, like, the whole 24 hours, at least until I had to do homework or needed to sleep. I still miss the "comfort food" TV that was any mixture of X-Play, Cinematech, Filter, Judgement Day, Cheat, Electric Playground, G4TV.com, Icons, The Screen Savers, and Unscrewed with Martin Sargent. It was basically my education in everything videogames, since up that point I only ever owned a hand-me-down NES with random games I could never figure out how to play, and a Nintendo 64 with just the games my middle school friends said were cool. By the time I really started to play a lot of games, I was purchasing an Xbox, but I felt like I had an encyclopedic knowledge of franchises, creators, and important moments from games I'd never even played. I bet I was pretty nerdy. I bet I still probably am.

X-Play lost me a few years ago when it turned into basically a news show, it was bland and kinda boring, and I never really got comfortable with Blair Herter's style of hosting. Everything felt too fake. From the time that I was watching G4, starting in middle school, X-Play was the best when it was just Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, doing fairly long video reviews with a sense of humor (as immature as that sense was). I still remember the rude announcer intros, and the "interns" wearing t-shirts that said...intern, who were constantly humiliated and played terrible characters with terrible costumes, for the sake of terrible (yet still funny to me, somehow) humor.

As much as I loved Attack of the Show, it needed to go. After watching one episode, I watched the show's predecessor, The Screen Savers, every when I got home from school, and learned a lot about technology and geek culture that I was just getting into as a teenager, even though I didn't have physical access to much of it and the only computer in the house was really slow and old. When it changed direction and the title became Attack of the Show, I still watched, but it was a very different, and much more pop-culture related show. Original hosts Kevin Rose and Sarah Lane left, and came back around after Olivia Munn had been there awhile. It was no longer a tech show, or really a gaming show. Honestly there was nothing about Attack of Show that was helpful for my day to day life. It was just two funny people who had good chemistry together, doing incredibly stupid shit for an hour of actually live television every weekday. It was the kind of "just do whatever we feel like" spirit that I feel like I got from the Whiskey Media websites and now GiantBomb.com. It was just fun, and I like having fun, even if I'm just sitting in front of the TV watching what was basically a talk show.

But all those people have moved on, and the shows that used to be my favorites are just bad imitations of what they used to be. I'm glad they can just be done with and no longer tarnish all of my good memories. Maybe someday there will be something video game related on TV I can just leave on all day that captures that same style that I was hooked on for so many years. Doubtful, but I can dream, can't I?

I didn't get to watch AOTS much but I really liked it. X Play was pretty cool too. And now I have no reason to tune into G4.
