My Top Ten Favorite HBO Shows
Just because a show wasn't listed doesn't mean I hate it save for Sex in the City and Entourage. Sadly I have not seen every HBO show so I can't comment on critical darlings like Treme, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, or Rome.
| 1. The Wire The best police show ever made. It's smartly written, feels realistic, every character seems well fleshed out, and the criminals feel like real people not monsters or stereotypes like a lot of police dramas. | |
| 2. Mr. Show with Bob and David I credit this show with shaping my sense of humor as a teenager and as the greatest sketch comedy show ever made. | |
| 3. Oz I swear this show is responsible for every male character actor you see currently on TV. One of the most depressing and violent dramas on HBO. Also some great social commentary that still applies to America's prison state. | |
| 4. Eastbound & Down Sometimes it's fun to cheer for an unrepentant asshole... | |
| 5. Curb Your Enthusiasm and sometimes it is fun to laugh at his misfortune. | |
| 6. The Sopranos While the lackluster ending may have soured a lot of people's opinion on the show though I still love it. The Sopranos might have its faults but when it is running on all cylinders it is like watching Goodfellas or any great gangster movie. | |
| 7. Game of Thrones As someone who typically hates fantasy I am surprised at how much I love this show. I am pretty sure it has to do with the fact that at its heart Games of Thrones is a political drama that just happens to be set in a fantasy world. | |
| 8. The Larry Sanders Show Hey Now! A great piece of 90's nostalgia that still makes me laugh. What started out as a satire of the late night wars between Jay Leno and David Letterman is still relevant today given the recent fight between Leno and Conan O'Brien. | |
| 9. Tales from the Crypt My first HBO show! I am sure it doesn't hold up as well as I remember especially the Crypt Keeper's "horrorible" puns but it was one of my earliest taste of the horror genre. | |
| 10. True Blood This show is more of a guilty pleasure then anything else. I know it is silly and kinda dumb but it is a lot of campy fun and isn't Twilight. It doesn't hurt that there is a lot of nudity and gore. |
