Since the success of his show, Louis CK has been on the absolute ball in terms of his comedy, and practically everything else. As a filmmaker, he’s been improving and really showing passion for making a good-looking project. During his season one commentary, when not emphasizing what he’s eating, Louis talks happily and excitedly about cinematography, and the strengths of the RED camera. I think that’s pretty damn fascinating, especially coming from someone who is normally acknowledged as a writer/kind-of-actor. But some people don’t realize that the man has quite the directorial background to him, be it Pootie Tang or several black and white indie films he made in the early 90s. Yet FX’s Louie has been the perfect platform for him to develop as a talent in this respect, as well as a writer, and specifically as an actor. Even though it’s a small glimpse of what is in store, in addition to past news on what will go down, this teaser screams that season 3 for Louie is already shaping up to be everything fans expect and more.
Jazzy tunes, beautiful visuals and editing, and a goofy, self-demeaning gag to top it all off- this is definitely the Louie that we all know and love. The general idea of the teaser is paying homage to Woody Allen’s classic film Manhattan, with black and white imagery of Louie’s favorite city and home, New York. I have yet to see Manhattan, as well as a majority of Allen’s master-works, but the fact that Louie would reference such is quite promising to what we will see this summer. CK seems to have only developed as a visual storyteller, and as made evident through the show and his most recent stand-up film Live From the Beacon Theater (clever name), he’s getting even better as a writer, especially in terms of comedy. But in some strange way, I’m starting to look forward to the man handling more dark, and even dramatic things. It's especially great because when his character is the subject of such heft, he holds his own quite well! The last episode of season 2 had me in tears, all because of his performance, as well as direction. Season 1 had its occasional bleak-sports, and many moments in season 2 made me cry, man- he’s got the capabilities to do good drama amidst excellent comedy. Hell, in an interview, CK claimed that characters are going to straight up DIE this season. That’s crazy, I say, but knowing him, it won’t be for no reason. In a similar turn to Jody Hill’s Eastbound and Down, I feel like we’re going to see some straight-up serious moments this season, without any attempt to be hilarious or anything. I know it’s weird that I really hope for bad things to happen, but I only do so because I know Louis will not do us wrong.
It’s only 30 seconds, but from all we’ve heard outside of it, along with the teaser, I can’t help but be overly excited. Louis CK is the kind of man who doesn’t settle for decency. Based on how he’s discussing the upcoming season, he seems like he doesn’t want to disappoint with it in execution, and tried his hardest to make it good, in fact better. Expectations will be met, and exceeded- I have maybe a bit too much confidence here, but dammit, I feel too excited to try and be realistic. Louis CK needs to keep working in front of and behind the camera, and I feel like season 3 of his beloved show will be ultimate proof of his worth, if we really need it in the first place. If you doubt him, I’ll hurt you.
I’m kidding, of course (sleep with a kitchen knife under your pillow.)
Impressed: Very, considering it’s only 30 seconds.
Will Watch It: Absolutely not, why would I? (Of course I will, you silly Lilly goose bo-William.)
NOW, let's pray we'll get Louis making a film some time soon.
