It probably says a lot about how truly irrelevant the Golden Globes are that I, someone who writes about film for a living, only just now realized this awards show is happening this weekend. And lo and behold, it is! On NBC! This Sunday! Weird, right?
I expect we'll be online watching. Maybe we'll even throw open the chat room. Who knows! What I do know is that films will be awarded globes of a golden sheen, and Ricky Gervais will probably call someone a god-loving, alcoholic fatty, or something. Should be fun!
Other than the Golden Globes, there are actually several completely excellent options for television watching this weekend, and they aren't even restricted to Sunday night! It's like everything's gone topsy-turvy!
| Chuck Friday at 8PM - NBC - Bo Derek guest-stars as herself for some reason. Look, if you're watching Chuck at this point, you don't need me to explain to you why you should watch Chuck this week. Just go on about your business. | |
| A Gifted Man Friday at 8PM - CBS - I'm just kidding. Just thought I'd throw out another gentle reminder that this show still exists. Nope, I don't know why either. | |
| Fringe Friday at 9PM - FOX - Peter journeys into the other universe to confront Walternate and...wait...are they really calling that dude Walternate now? Seriously? That's pretty great, actually. | |
| Portlandia Friday at 10PM - IFC - The pair become obsessed with Battlestar Galactica, and it begins to take over their lives. Also, at some point, someone will make fun of hippies. | |
| The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret Friday at 10:30PM - IFC - I missed last week's premiere, but if this is anything like the first season, it will be reasonably funny and receive roughly ten times as much praise as it actually deserves because most of the cast is British or from Arrested Development. Seriously, this show is fine, but it's not overly special. | |
| 6. The Miss America Pageant Saturday at 9PM - FOX - Brooke Burke and some dude host the annual pageant, in which we declare our nation's hottest woman. She will then go into battle against the other chosen hot women of the world's other nations, and hopefully come home victorious, showing once again that America has the hottest women. We're still stinging from that top 16 finish last year. That's what we get for picking a chick from New Jersey! | |
| Collision Earth Saturday at 9PM - SyFy - Oh SyFy apocalyptic movies, I super duper missed you. | |
| Austin City Limits Saturday at 9PM - PBS - The Arcade Fire perform. As someone who's seen them live a couple of times now, they're worth watching. | |
| The Simpsons Sunday at 8PM - FOX - The Simpsons finally get around to doing a Social Network parody. How thorough is it? Armie Hammer guest-stars as the Winklevoss twins, who have to take part in a rowing competition against Patty and Selma. Wait, what? | |
| Napoleon Dynamite Sunday at 8:30 and 9:30PM - FOX - I have no idea whether this show will be worthwhile in the slightest, but you know what? It can't possibly be any less interesting than Allen Gregory, so hey, why not give it a shot? Two episodes air on Sunday, with Family Guy sandwiched in-between because nobody bumps Family Guy. Nobody. | |
| Hell on Wheels Sunday at 10PM - AMC - Season finale! While this show has had its ups and downs, I'd say I think it was quite a bit more successful at what it aimed to do than recent AMC starters like The Killing and Rubicon. Hoping for a second season. | |
| Californication Sunday at 10:30PM - Showtime - Peter Berg guest-stars as himself. It's probably too much to hope for that they give him shit for making Battleship, right? |
