What TV shows have you consciously given up on?

In the past few years, I think I've started but neglected to finish Fringe, Chuck, and Battlestar Galactica. None of these were really given up on out of frustration, though; I just kind of lost interest at some point along the way. Fringe I stopped about halfway through the first season when the dick FBI supervisor guy showed up. Chuck I made it halfway through Season 3, I think? After Chuck and the girl got together. BSG I'm almost at the end of, and should probably go back and catch the last few episodes on Netflix, although I hear somewhat bad things about it.

By comparison, I've caught up on Mad Men entirely over the last year, and I'm looking forward to getting Breaking Bad season 4 on Netflix or DVD. I would hope that I wouldn't have to buy it, but hopefully it'll hit streaming soon. It's rare for me to get any length into a television show and then not finish it; I usually feel obligated. But lately there just hasn't been a huge amount of time for me to watch TV lately, so I don't feel too bad about abandoning something I'm not 100% behind.

Fringe I think is one of those shows that you had to give time to.

I caught up after I went to NY Comic Con and the Fringe panel previewed/hyped their return from winter break with some goddamn arc storyline/episodes that mattered. Then I was back on board for Season 2, except I caught up on a few weeks worth at once and then had no more episodes to watch for a while, then sort of forgot about it.

I only watched the show at first because they used to film it in my city, and I can see why you might have gotten sick of it. It really was monster of the week for way too long. But I hear only good things from where I left off. Ballsy things.

I know you always say that you just don't have time for TV, running this site with all your free time, and that's okay.

But um....my answer is Heroes. For obvious reasons.

I also lost interest in Battlestar Galactica's latter seasons. I never felt comfortable with the Cylons' newly-founded--though clearly not lacking in fervour--religious beliefs. I don't know--none of it gelled well with me; the transformation/s and characterisation of the Cylons in the later seasons left me a little befuddled. Actually, scrap that--it left me supremely under-whelmed and displeased.

I also ceased watching The Walking Dead after the second episode of the second season. I harbour nothing but vituperation for that poorly-written, perfunctorily-acted, and languidly-paced show. Seriously, I don't know how the showrunners did it, but I came to feverishly dislike all of the characters by the time I decided to retire from the show. I'll cease my complaining here--I don't plan on inveighing more than I have to; I don't feel like meeting with any admonitions from incited fans.

I WISH I stopped watching Battlestar Galactica. As far as I'm concerned, the show ended with the fourth episode of season 3: They escaped New Caprica and got away. Don't tell me either wise.

Anyway, shows I've conciously chosen to stop watching:

House. It was getting so stupid, like a cartoon. House wasn't house, he was a cartoon character. Yes, he was always a bit over the top, but it was at least remotely believable. When I quit watching, he was doing shit like shooting hookers with a crossbow and driving a monster truck in the streets. Fucking retarded, I'm done.

Dexter. Season 1 and 2 were amazing, and after that it was mostly downhill but watchable. Season 6 is not watchable. I got half way in and could not take it.

Oh yeah. House is a good one. It was never a..."great" show, but when your college roommate and his friends marathon 5 seasons of the show in a week in the living space you both share, you begin to notice the well worn tropes that show can never get away from.

You know, the guy gets sick, he comes in, they think it's one thing, they treat it, it gets worse, they treat it, it gets worse, they treat it, it gets better, then worse, then they almost give up, then it turns out the guy lied about something, then they treat it and he is saved.

Oh, God! Your stances on Dexter and House couldn't be more harmonious with my own. Man, the first season of Dexter is brilliant.

I have (for now) given up on all the CSIs, Dexter, House, Fringe, Chuck, Greys Anatomy, Eureka, Rescue Me, Glee, Modern Family, Heroes.. there are more I just can't remember them right now.

There are a few shows that I have watched a few episodes and really want to watch but just haven't had the time, like; Homeland, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Mad Men.

I really need to catch up on my TV, but at the moment I can't even seem to keep up with my favourite shows never mind new/old ones.

So I guess I'm in the minority that still loves House and thinks it's still just as great as the older episodes.

If I start watching a show I feel kinda obligated to finish it, which would probably explain why I'm still watching Bleach. The only recent shows I can think of that I stopped watching are South Park and Heroes.

It's hard for me to give up on watching something, unfortunately. Almost had the chance with Dollhouse. That show was really boring but the payoff with Summer Glau's character was worth it. The absolutely best thing about that show was definitely the guy who played Victor. When he did his impression of that science guy, I was, to put it simply, blown away. Not that that was the only thing that made me like the guy but I thought he was the most interesting character and best at differentiating his roles, especially with Eliza Dushku's stale performances next to his. I honestly thought she was just going to be some sex doll every episode with actual serious shit happening around her without being a part of it, and that would've been perfect for her, but no.

I did, however, stop watching Heroes. Pretty self-explanatory. I stopped when they revealed that Hayden Panettiere's character was the catalyst or some-shit like that. They really should have stuck with the original plan and replace all of the characters every season.

There was a time in the middle of Battlestar Galactica's fourth season that I just couldn't stand the series anymore. They made me hate so many characters that I previously liked or had no strong feeling toward them either way, that I just quit cold turkey. Ultimately, I finished off the series and am happy that I did. The latter half of season 4 was alright. Still had a massive hatred for Tory/Tori though. Seriously could not stand how unforgivably huge a piece of shit she was. Maybe I'm racist, but I did think the actress who played Dualla was the most beautiful woman on that show.

Walking Dead, Heroes and Flash Forward were shows that just didn't do it for me so I stopped watching them all together. Dexter was a show that I marathoned through to try and catch up with everyone else but by the time I was finished with the first four seasons I was just done with it, when you start watching those episodes back to back the faults in that show really start to become apparent.

Fringe is a show that I've given time to and I'm completely invested in it now but I can completely understand people who stop watching it (most of my friends have).

I also gave up on Battlestar Galactica but I actually stopped midway through season two. I couldn't stand any of the characters and I felt like the show was going nowhere. I've also given up on NCIS because that show has just been on too long and there's nothing interesting about it anymore.

I gave up on Portlandia. Nothing about that show was doing anything for me.

I stopped watching Persons of Interest rather quickly. Also stopped watching The Walking Dead and Justified recently. Can't really remember many others, I normally stick with shows once I have started them.

Nothing comes to mind for current TV. I don't watch many shows with any regularity, so I tend to stick with the few I do. I did give up on Stargate Universe after I missed a few episodes and I dropped Heroes halfway through season 3. The bigger problem I have is falling asleep before a show airs at night. I don't have a DVR anymore, so I have to watch it when it's on, wait for a rerun or the DVDs. I've missed the new season of Archer so far because I tend to drift off before 10. I haven't dropped it, since it's the type of show where missing one or all isn't a huge deal, but I hope to catch up at some point. Sadly, Hulu isn't carrying it this season.

I gave up on House a few episodes after he started dating Cuddy. I'll catch up eventually, but I need some more time off.

I'm also really close to giving up on The Walking Dead. The action scenes have been really the last few episodes, but the characters and dialogue are still frustratingly terrible.

Heroes is the only show I've purposely given up on because of declining quality. I did not watch (still have not seen) the last two episodes of Pushing Daisies because I was so depressed by its cancellation.

Battlestar Galactica has to be finished to be understood. For me at least, it's the ideal example of how to make an anti-war war show. I also think that all of the "mysteries" are extremely well wrapped up, even when some aren't wrapped up at all. (It's intentional people!) ;) I too however left the show around the middle of season 3 and waited a few months before finishing it off. But I'm forever grateful that I did.

As far as giving up on shows, most that I've dropped have already been listed above, but I guess I'll throw The Event in the ring. Really wanted to like it, but you can only watch the same confusingly improbable chase through a hospital lobby about 4 times before you get sick of it. Also, 24. Loved the first season. Then Elisha Cuthbert was in it way more. Then I stopped.

I had my own series finale for The Office. The show was finally done for me when Jim and Pam got married. The first 3 seasons were perfect and amazing and it was all down hill from there. Can't believe that show is still going, probably should be put out of it's misery.

I also gave up on Breaking Bad during the 3rd season. The show went where I didn't want it to go. I thought the first 2 season's were brilliant and turning Hank into a serious character was the last straw for me.

Modern Family also has seemed to decline this season and I have stopped paying attention.

Dexter I stopped basically after the first couple episodes of season 2 because of how they were handling his sister and his girlfriend. Community I stopped after season 2 because it got weird/not funny, although I might try again since I had once upon a time loved that show. Supernatural I stopped after season 5 ended, but that's just because I didn't bother keeping up, and that seemed like a nice place to leave off on - although again I might consider going back. It wasn't the greatest show, but it was consistently good, and different from everything else. Death Note I gave up on about halfway through, because it got real fucking stupid after... certain events that could have been acceptable conclusions on their own.

I've been giving up on TV shows a lot lately, it seems. I used to be absolutely devoted to a lot of TV, and would be super pissed off if I missed an episode. Having a DVR seems to have freed me of that mindset. Maybe TOO much, as I wind up just letting a lot of shows get backlogged. When my DVR gets close to full, I end up deciding which shows I genuinely care about catching up on, and which ones I am OK with deleting and removing from my life. I guess it's helped me put in perspective just how valuable TV is to my time compared to other things.
