With Megan Ellison's announcement on Twitter that Terminator 5 would be rated R, I got to thinking that well it's about time I did one of these blogs. The Terminator franchise has been around for quite a while and has well kind of a troubled history as you've got two great and incredibly memorable followed by a pretty good third film, then a really weird TV Show was made, and then you had Terminator: Salvation. We know James Cameron isn't going to do another Terminator movie anytime soon because of the work load the guy has but at least this film is going to continue the quality of the first several films.

No details have even come out yet about Terminator 5 and I'm pretty sure there is even a target release date set for the film. For a time director Justin Lin was attached to the project but dropped out due to his commitments on the Fast & Furious franchise. I myself personally think Ridley Scott has the chops to direct this film but that's just me.

The big question on everybody's mind for this film is, is Arnold Schwarzenegger going to be in it? Well he is getting pretty old but I'm pretty sure the guy's still interested in doing it. I'd rather see him in The Terminator films than The Expendables films (Nothing against Stallone, it's just Schwarzenegger does need to return to this franchise).

The series is most definitely relevant today as systems much like Skynet are starting to pop up as man becomes increasingly reliant on technology. In the series, unmanned military vehicles and augmented systems are the norm and that's sort of what's happening in today's world. We now have drones that we can launch from any US Military base in the world and strike at any given time any where in the world. It's not like missiles where nobody is piloting them, these are remotely piloted. I hope the film deals with some of that kind of stuff because it really fits right in with what the films are all about.

Director: Ridley Scott

If there's anyone who can helm a Terminator, it's Ridley Scott. He's already got two sci-fi films under his belt both of which are regarded as masterpieces but in my opinion only one of them deserves to be called that (Alien). He's currently developing another film set in the Blade Runner universe which I really want to see him do because it's about time there was more to that universe.

The Cast

The main character in the film has not been revealed and I don't think it's going to be one we already know so I can't include a choice for that role.

I assume that since this isn't going to be a reboot, Sarah Connor will somehow be in the film and with that assumption I assume Linda Hamilton will once again be back in the role. I honestly don't want to have to cast a younger actress in the role but If I had to, I'd choose Kate Beckinsale or maybe Gina Carano.
Young ass John Connor
Young ass John Connor
I assume John Connor is going to be in this film since he is one of the most important characters in the franchise. Since he's been played by a different actor in every film and even in the show, I guess I'll give my choice for the role. So I have to choose Jensen Ackles. Comic book fans will recognize him as the voice of Red Hood in the stellar animated film Batman: Under The Red Hood and others will recognize him from Supernatural.
Schwarzenegger (if he does return) is going to have a substantial role in the film though he will not be the lead if does come back for this film according to Megan Ellison who currently holds the rights to the franchise. The lead role is to be played a younger actor but as of right now we still don't know if that character is a pre-existing one or will be completely new. I'll update this blog I guess when more information on that character arrives.

Interesting idea about Linda Hamilton coming back. I never saw Salvation - was she good in that? The most recent work of her's that I've been watching recently is Chuck, in which she plays a grandmother. Has she still got the chops for an action-oriented role? I like the alternative!

The Director - Depends if you want it to be more T1 or T2JD. T1 was more of a suspense survival movie, a big lurking predator methodically hunting its prey. That makes me think of the Coen Bros. after the brilliant job they did on No Country. Only the early scenes of T2 were suspense, the rest became a proper popcorn action movie, which no one has quite done as well since the golden age of your Die Hards and Commandos.

The Arnold - Speaking of No Country, hows about Javier Bardem for the starring role?

The Sarah - Hmmph. Women who can act tough but not in the eye candy way (sorry Rose), and old enough to be a mom (sorry Emma) (sorry Rorie). I suppose if you could go for a more comedic John Conner, full Furlong, and break some racial barriers, and have that kid from Modern Family play it, you could get a Michelle Rodriguez here.

Modern Furlong - Aside from the kids from Modern Family, I'm at a loss at figuring out child actors who aren't abominations. If your Sarah is older, maybe a later teen'd John Conner could be played by shockingly grown up but so embossed in our brains as a child actor he can play a an 8th grader for another ten years, by Haley Joel Osment.

Robert Patrick - Bill Fichtner If I have to explain, you're likely one of these people.

Molesty Insane Asylum Guard - Philip Seymour Hoffman
